Hockey upsets #14 Western Michigan

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Connor Marritt and Maximillion Helgeson each finished with one goal and one assist to lead Alaska Anchorage to a 3-1 win over No. 14 Western Michigan Saturday.

"The win tonight was for all the people who helped bring the program back," said head coach Matt Shasby. "This win represents the kind of team we are. We have each other's backs, blocking shots. We had a goalie suffer cramps and Nolan Kent stepped up and finished the game for us in goal."

Marritt opened the scoring with his first goal of the season at 13:37 of the first period. Maximilion Helgeson and James Darby each earned assists.

The Broncos answered less than a minute later with a power-play goal by Jamie Rome.

UAA took advantage of a 5-on-3 opportunity to regain the lead thanks to a goal by William Gilson at 13:57 of the second period. Derek Hamelin recorded the only assist.

The third period featured the third UAA goal, this one coming from the stick of Maximilion Helgeson at 1:41. Connor Marritt and Matt Allen each collected assists on the play.

The Broncos pulled the goalie and were on the powerplay for most of the last two minutes of the game, but the Seawolves defense held strong.

Joey Lamoreaux made 17 saves on 18 shots before being replaced by Nolan Kent with 15:25 remaining. Kent finished with four saves.

WMU finished with a 22-11 edge in shots, and both teams finished 1-for-4 on the powerplay.

Alaska Anchorage and Western Michigan will close out the weekend series Sunday at 5:07 pm.
