FAIRBANKS, Alaska –
Lisa Jaunet had 12 kills and fellow senior
Ellen Floyd dished 29 assists Saturday to help the 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its ninth straight victory with a 25-20, 25-19, 25-14 sweep of Alaska Fairbanks at the Patty Center.
The Seawolves (17-1, 7-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 kills, six digs and three aces from rightside hitter
Eve Stephens and 12 digs, three aces and two assists from libero
Talia Leauanae as they outhit the hosts .291 to .101 and posted a 9-3 edge in aces.
The Nanooks (13-6, 3-4) were led by nine kills from outside hitter Karli Nielson, but could not capitalize on an early 8-0 run in the opening set.
"A lot of teams might have been rattled by a slow start like that out of the gate, but they showed that mental toughness again which has been one of our calling cards this year," said UAA head coach
Chris Green. "This was a great team victory, especially considering it came against a quality opponent and a motivated rival on their home court."
Facing a 10-3 hole in the first set, Floyd struck for a kill and
Makana Eleneki recorded an ace to stem the Nanooks' momentum. UAA chipped away until Stephens knotted the set 15-15 with a kill, and Jaunet mashed a kill during a four-point run that made it 23-18. The Seawolves clinched the opener on back-to-back mistakes by UAF, including one of its four ball-handling errors.
The set second would feature seven ties and six lead changes before UAA took control late. Trailing 17-16, the Seawolves responded with the next six points, highlighted by two aces from Leauanae and a block by Stephens and
Leilani Elder. Elder teamed with Floyd to stuff Rilee White on set point, capping a 9-2 run.
UAA dominated the third set, racking up 15 kills on .591 hitting and four aces. Jaunet – an outside hitter from St. Denis, France – had five kills on eight swings in the final frame, while Elder – a sophomore middle blocker from Kansas City, Mo. – converted all three of her attacks.
Sophomore outside hitter
Nicole Blue had six kills and two blocks, sophomore middle blocker
Isabel Evans tallied a team-high four blocks, and Floyd added three kills on .500 hitting.
