Red Leafs upset #9 Seawolves in 4 sets in Canada

BURNABY, British Columbia – Eve Stephens delivered 22 kills and 14 digs but the 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team could not overcome upset-minded Simon Fraser on Thursday in a 25-23, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23 loss at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (21-2, 11-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 43 assists and 16 digs from senior setter Ellen Floyd as their 13-match win streak came to an end.

The Red Leafs (8-12, 5-6) got double-figure kills from four players, including 13 kills on .440 hitting from Kalyn Hartmann and 12 kills, 10 digs and five block assists from Brooke Dexter.

"I give credit to Simon Fraser on executing a great game plan," said UAA head coach Chris Green. "They were able to take advantage of our mistakes, and they won the serve/pass game. We just dug ourselves too big of holes in the sets we lost. This is a tough loss, but we will refocus and get prepared for another huge match Saturday at Western Washington."

The Seawolves trailed 21-13 and 23-16 in the opening set before making a gigantic comeback, knotting it when Stephens and Isabel Evans teamed for their second block in a 7-0 run. The Red Leafs answered, however, getting kills from Abby Willett and Hanna Kolof to hand UAA just its second first-set loss of the season.

UAA controlled the second frame behind the play of sophomores Nicole Blue and Leilani Elder. Blue had three kills on four swings, while Elder served the first two aces of her career and delivered two kills, including the set-point spike.

The Seawolves trailed 7-0 and 18-9 in the third set before another big rally that ultimately fell short. Floyd and Elder teamed to block Jocelyn Sherman to draw within 22-20 and freshman Emma Patterson had a kill to make it 24-22, but Willett ended it with another kill of her own.

UAA took a 16-12 lead in the fourth on a kill by Stephens, only to see SFU answer with five straight points. The Seawolves never regained the lead, and the hosts pulled ahead 23-20 with three consecutive points. Despite a rallying to tie it 23-23, the Seawolves could not stop a cross-court attack by Davida Hill, and Lisa Jaunet hit into a block by Willett and Dexter on match point.

Jaunet finished with 11 kills, while Blue and Elder had seven apiece. Senior libero tallied 14 digs, two aces and three assists, while freshman defensive specialist Madison Galloway's 11 digs were her most in a GNAC match.

Simon Fraser, which avenged a 3-1 setback to UAA last month in Anchorage, became the first team to outhit the Seawovles this year, .237 to .221.

Now just a half-match ahead of 10th-ranked Western Washington (15-4, 10-1) in the GNAC standings, UAA travels south to face the Vikings on Saturday at 6 p.m. ADT at Carver Gymnasium in Bellingham. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
