NAMPA, Idaho – Senior
Eve Stephens registered a career-best defensive performance and local product
Emma Patterson delivered a spark off the bench Saturday to help the 9th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to its 11th straight victory, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14, 25-21 over Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.
The Seawolves (19-1, 9-0 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 42 assists, 16 digs and four kills from senior setter
Ellen Floyd as they finished the first half of the league schedule and beat NNU for the eighth time in a row.
Stephens accumulated 16 kills, six block assists and a career-high 19 digs, while Patterson – a sophomore middle blocker from nearby Boise – had career bests of four kills and five blocks, all in the final three sets.
The Nighthawks (12-5, 5-4) were led by 14 kills, 12 digs and three aces from outside hitter Natalie Sullivan and 25 digs from libero Caroline McMahon, but the hosts managed to hit just .140 and were hurt by a big disadvantage in the service game, tallying 10 service errors and allowing nine Seawolf aces.
"Our block was good again today against a very good offensive team," said UAA head coach
Chris Green, whose team outblocked the hosts 12-7. "We slowed down their hitters enough to get the win when our offense wasn't as consistent as we need to be."
Coming off road sweeps of Alaska Fairbanks and Central Washington, the Seawolves continued their momentum with a wire-to-wire victory in the opening set Saturday, boosted by nine assists and five digs from Floyd.
The Nighthawks would take control of the second frame midway through, building a lead of 20-13 before the Seawolves rallied to make it close. UAA fought off three set points to make it 24-23, but NNU called timeout and responded with a kill from Sullivan to tie the match.
The Seawolves answered by dominating the third, getting four kills on six swings from senior
Lisa Jaunet and five kills from sophomore
Leilani Elder. Floyd racked up 14 assists on just 27 sets in the frame as UAA outhit the hosts .303 to .000.
UAA trailed 9-7 in the fourth when Elder started a 4-0 run with another kill. Stephens stretched the Seawolves' advantage to 22-18 with her final kill of the afternoon, and Elder blasted a kill off the NNU block on match point. Despite being held without a kill through the first two sets, Elder finished the day with a career-high eight kills, along with five block assists.
Senior outside hitter
Lisa Jaunet finished with 12 kills on team-best .258 hitting, while senior libero
Talia Leauanae had another solid match with 16 digs, three aces and 23-of-23 serve receiving.
