Seawolves dominate Wolves, clinch GNAC title share

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Eve Stephens ripped 18 kills and setter Ellen Floyd delivered another brilliant all-around performance Thursday to help the 5th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-19, 25-8, 25-18 sweep of Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building, clinching the Seawolves at least a share of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title.

Floyd had five kills and match-highs of 26 assists, five aces and nine digs for UAA (26-2, 16-1 GNAC), which can clinch the outright title with a win at Saint Martin's or a Western Washington loss to Seattle Pacific on the final day of the regular season Saturday.

Western Oregon (9-16, 5-12) was led by nine kills on .304 hitting from Bailee Hartsook, but the hosts could not slow the Seawolves' offense, which hit .529 through the first two sets and finished with a .370 attack percentage.

"We were a little more efficient offensively tonight than we have been lately, and our tough serve really helped slow down their fast offensive system," said UAA head coach Chris Green, who also led UAA to GNAC titles in 2009, 2015 and 2016. "We are happy that we've accomplished one of our major goals, but our team knows the job isn't finished. We want to finish strong and earn it outright, and we're excited to have that chance against another tough opponent Saturday."

Entering with an 18-match win streak in the series, UAA got a challenge in the opening set when the Wolves erased a four-point deficit to forge a 17-17 tie on a kill by Hartsook. But Floyd set Stephens for a kill on the next point, then capped a 4-0 run with her third ace to retake control, and UAA got kills from Isabel Evans and Nicole Blue to end it.

After a brief 2-2 tie in the second, the Seawolves dominated behind .619 hitting (13 kills-0 errors-21 attacks) in the frame. Senior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet had three kills on six swings, and Evans swung 2-for-2 as UAA finished on a 23-6 run.

The Seawolves erased an early 5-2 hole in the third to pull away midway through the set, holding the Wolves to -.108 hitting in the finale.

Stephens hit .548 (18-1-31) and posted a match-high seven total blocks as the GNAC's all-time kills leader raised her total to 1,897.

Blue had four kills on .500 hitting and two of UAA's 10 aces, while Evans tallied four kills and five total blocks.

With the GNAC's automatic NCAA Tournament berth now in hand thanks to a season sweep of Western Washington, UAA heads north to face Saint Martin's at 4 p.m. AST Saturday at Marcus Pavilion. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for live video and stats links.
