HONOLULU – Senior guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich scored 17 points and sophomore forward
Kate Robertson delivered a double-double Sunday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team fend off Hawaii Pacific for a 79-70 victory at the Shark Tank.
The Seawolves (2-0) got 14 points and 12 rebounds from Robertson – a transfer from Casper (Wyo.) College – while senior forward
Vishe' Rabb finished with 17 points, five rebounds and two steals.
The Sharks (0-3) were led by 27 points and 10 rebounds from center Abby Spurgin, but the hosts were hurt by 20 turnovers, including seven in the fourth quarter.
"I'm really happy to see the way our senior leaders stepped up tonight and helped us lock down a tough win against a much-improved HPU team," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team overcame a 32-11 disadvantage in free throw attempts. "Aside from committing too many fouls all night, we did a great job of executing in every other phase over the last five minutes."
Entering the night unbeaten in 11 all-time meetings with HPU, the Seawolves led 23-16 after the first quarter and 38-35 at halftime.
UAA would never relinquish the lead in the second half, although the Sharks pulled within 61-60 at the 6:52 mark of the fourth quarter. Leading 64-62, Rabb and
Ra'Anaa Bey delivered back-to-back steals, leading to three baskets by Robertson and Rabb in a 55-second span. Hajdukovich nailed a three-pointer at the 2-minute mark and again with 1:18 left to cap the clinching 12-0 run.
Hajdukovich shot 6 of 11 from the field, 4 of 8 from long range and added seven rebounds, while point guard
Anaiah Moore had eight points on 4-of-4 shooting, four assists and just one turnover.
The Seawolves conclude their brief Honolulu trip with a 6:30 p.m. AST tip against Chaminade on Monday at McCabe Gymnasium.
