ANCHORAGE – Senior guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich delivered 21 points and senior forward
Vishe' Rabb had 19 points to power the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to an 88-75 victory over La Salle in the title game of the ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves – ranked No. 14 in the NCAA Div. II top-25 media poll – also got 11 points and nine assists from all-tourney selection
Nicole Pinckney as they captured their eighth Shootout title in the tournament's 39-year history.
The Explorers (4-2) were led by 21 points from guard Claire Jacobs and 18 points and eight rebounds from forward Kayla Spruill, who each also made the all-tournament team.
"It was a great team win tonight," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team defended its title from the last time the tournament was held in 2017. "Our ladies did an excellent job of executing our game plan in the first half. La Salle is a very good team, though, and they made some adjustments that threw us off. But we had great play from our seniors down the stretch and hit some timely shots to secure a huge win for our program. I'm extremely proud of these players and this accomplishment, and it gives us something to build on for the remainder of this long season."
After a tight opening 10 minutes, the Seawolves pulled away with a dominating second quarter, shooting 10 of 16 from the field and 5 of 9 from three-point range. Rabb scored seven points in the quarter as UAA outscored the Philadelphians 25-9 to take a 45-26 halftime lead.
The onslaught continued in the second half, resulting in a 54-28 lead when
Jazzpher Evans stole the ball and fed
Anaiah Moore for a fast-break layup. La Salle would not go away, however, getting 13 points from Jacobs in the third quarter to slice its deficit to 64-53 with 10 minutes to play.
UAA's lead was cut to 77-67 with 3:44 left and 80-73 with 1:56 remaining before Pinckney swished a back-breaking jumper with 44 seconds on the clock.
Rabb shot 7 of 11 from the field (3-6 3FGs), along with six rebounds and two steals, as the Augustana (S.D.) transfer earned the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award.
Meanwhile, Hajdukovich was 5 of 9 from the field, 3 of 6 from long range and 8 of 8 at the foul stripe, while grabbing a game-high nine rebounds and dishing five assists. The local Dimond High product also was named to the all-tournament team.
Another local product Pinckney (Chugiak HS) shot 4 of 6 – including 3 of 3 on threes – and only committed one turnover, and sophomore guard
Jazzpher Evans finished with eight points, six assists, three steals and just one turnover.
The game was played as an exhibition for UAA and a regular counting game for La Salle.
UAA's other titles came in 1990, 2003, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2017. The win improves the Seawolves' all-time Shootout record to 40-56 – all against NCAA Div. I competition.
UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center next week for games Friday and Saturday (both 7 p.m.) against fellow NCAA Div. II West Region foe Biola. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and live links.
