Seawolves fend off Eagles with late run, 77-68

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward Vishe' Rabb scored 11 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter and sophomore guard Jazzpher Evans tallied 14 points Friday to help 15th-ranked Alaska Anchorage earn a 77-68 women's basketball victory over Biola.

The Seawolves (4-0) also got 10 points from senior guard Jahnna Hajdukovich as they outscored the visitors 15-6 over the final three and half minutes.

The Eagles (0-5) were led by 20 points from guard Eleni Cabera, who shot 7 of 12 overall and 6 of 11 from three-point range, but the Pacific West Conference club was hurt by 23 turnovers.

"We have to be more consistent and bring more intensity to both ends of the court than we did tonight if we want to be the team we think we can be this year," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team avoided its first regular-season home loss to a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent since the Alaska Airlines Center opened in 2014. "Fortunately we got some big plays from our veterans again down the stretch and closed it out well in the final few minutes. Biola is definitely a better team than its record indicates and we'll need to be better tomorrow."

Coming off exhibition victories over two Div. I teams last week in ASRC/ConocoPhillips Great Alaska Shootout, the Seawolves raced to a 15-6 lead and took a 21-17 edge after the first quarter. The visitors from La Mirada, Calif., responded with a huge second quarter, however, shooting 7 of 13 from the field and 5 of 8 from long range to flip the script. The Eagles built a 39-28 lead with a minute left in the period before UAA finished with three-pointers from Elaina Mack and Ra'Anaa Bey.

UAA dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 24-9 behind six points apiece from Evans and Mack, who finished with nine points (3-6 3FG).

Biola would make one more run though, starting the fourth quarter with a 12-2 spurt to forge a 60-60 tie on Jordan Rabe's putback basket at the 6:11 mark. Tied 62-62 three minutes later, Rabb drove strong to the hoop and drew the first of back-to-back shooting fouls against her. The Augustana (S.D.) transfer sank all four charities and grabbed one of her four steals moments later, leading to a fast-break layup by Kate Robertson. Rabb followed with a three-pointer to make it 71-62 with two minutes left, and the Eagles could get no closer than five points again.

Rabb led UAA with seven rebounds, while senior point guard Nicole Pinckney had seven points, five assists and just one turnover.

Evans shot 5 of 8 from the field – 2 of 3 on threes – and snagged four boards, and junior guard Anaiah Moore added four assists and two steals.
