Seawolves blitz Golden Eagles for 86-58 opening win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Senior forward Vishe' Rabb scored 21 points and grabbed 15 rebounds in her debut for the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team Sunday, leading the Seawolves to an 86-58 victory over La Sierra at Alumni Pavilion.

The Seawolves also got 13 points from senior guard Rachel Ingram and 10 points from guards Hayley Berfield and Elaina Mack as they won the program's 10th straight season opener.

The Golden Eagles (0-2) were led by 17 points and five assists from guard Sydney Wallner, but the NAIA hosts were forced into 29 turnovers, while forcing only six by the Seawolves.

"Our pressure definitely paid dividends today, which is an encouraging sign this early in the season," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team attempted a school-record 43 three-point shots. "I'm excited about the potential I see from this group."

After trailing 9-8 in the early going, the Seawolves took control for good with a 14-2 run, highlighted by a three-point play from Berfield.

UAA stretched its lead to 45-30 at halftime and 65-40 after three quarters, finishing the day with a whopping 85-49 advantage in field-goal attempts.

A second-team all-league performer at fellow NCAA Div. II program Augustana (S.D.) last year, Rabb shot 10 of 18 and dished a pair of assists.

All 11 active Seawolves had at least one steal, including a career-high four by senior guard Ra'Anaa Bey.

A third-year freshman, Mack returned to the court after playing briefly in the Covid season and redshirting last year. The King Cove native shot 3 of 6 from the field, including a pair of three-pointers, and made both of her free throws, also racking up two assists, two steals and no turnover in 10 minutes off the bench.

Sophomore guard Jazzpher Evans led UAA with five assists, while Bey and Jahnna Hajdukovich dished four apiece.

The Seawolves open their NCAA Div. II slate against Hawaii Pacific (Nov. 13, 3 pm) and Chaminade (Nov. 14, 6:30 pm) next week in Honolulu.
