ANCHORAGE – Seniors
Vishe' Rabb and
Jahnna Hajdukovich combined for 52 points and the 17th-ranked Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team overcame a pair of double-digit deficits Saturday to earn an 87-83 victory over William Jewell at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (7-1) got a career-high 27 points on 9-of-17 shooting and six rebounds from Rabb, while Hajdukovich produced 25 points – her second-most as a Seawolf – on 9-of-12 marksmanship. Sophomore forward
Kate Robertson added nine points and nine rebounds as UAA won its 31st straight regular-season non-conference game against Div. II opponents at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Cardinals (2-9) were led by 23 points and 10 rebounds from forward Emree Zars, but the visitors from Liberty, Mo., could not capitalize on red-hot shooting numbers of .556 (30 of 54) from the field and .524 (11 of 21) from three-point range.
"We cannot afford to keep digging first-quarter holes like we have the past few games and again tonight," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team's 25-11 deficit after the first 10 minutes marked its largest since women's college basketball went to quarters in 2015-16. "Fortunately our offense finally got rolling late in the second quarter, and we were able to simply outscore them down the stretch, thanks in large part to our senior leaders."
After snapping a 33-game losing skid against D-II opponents Wednesday, William Jewell looked confident in the first half, nailing 8 of 11 three-point attempts. The Great Lakes Valley Conference club led 38-20 when Chloe Frank knocked down a trey with 6:36 left in the second quarter, but UAA was able to close with an 18-5 run, getting a pair of baskets from Hajdukovich and
Jazzpher Evans in the surge.
The Seawolves finally retook the lead at 44-43 on a Hajdukovich trey early in the third quarter, only to see the Cardinals pull ahead 66-56 late in the period. Evans hit two free throws to stem the tide though, and Hajdukovich went coast-to-coast for a 15-foot jumper at the third-quarter buzzer.
Hajdukovich made it 72-72 with 5:32 left on a three-pointer, and followed two William Jewell free throws with another long-range dagger to give UAA the lead for good with 5:05 left. The former Dimond High School star then assisted on Rabb's trey a minute later as the Seawolves took their first two-possession lead all night.
Kate Hillyer hit one of her three three-pointers with a minute remaining to pull the visitors within 81-79, but Rabb answered with a driving layup, and UAA made 4 of 6 free throws to close it out.
Rabb and Hajdukovich each shot 5 of 7 from long range as they became the first Seawolf pair to reach the 25-point plateau in the same game since Sasha King (27) and Alysa Horn (25) in a victory over BYU-Hawaii, Dec. 17, 2012.
Senior point guard
Nicole Pinckney led UAA with four assists and just one turnover as the Seawolves helped themselves with only nine giveaways to William Jewell's 18.
Robertson grabbed four of the Seawolves' 12 offensive boards to help the hosts to a 15-0 advantage in second-chance points as well.
