#17 Seawolves crack Cardinals with big 3rd quarter

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward Vishe' Rabb led a balanced scoring effort with 16 points and 17th-ranked Alaska Anchorage used a big third-quarter surge to earn a 75-56 women's basketball victory over William Jewell on Sunday night at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (8-1) also got 14 points from senior guard Jahnna Hajdukovich and a career-high 13 points from junior guard Hayley Berfield as they won for the 66th time in their last 68 outings against non-conference Div. II opponents.

The Cardinals (2-10) were led by 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting from guard Ayden Shannon, along with 16 points and seven rebounds from wing Kate Hillyer.

"We didn't dig ourselves into another hole, and we were able to start wearing them down a little after halftime, which earned us some good interior looks at the basket," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team's five turnovers were just one off the school record. "We are playing a little shorthanded right now, so it was really nice to get great contributions off the bench as well, especially from Tubby Tovia with her all-around play and Hayley displaying the scoring touch we knew she possessed when we recruited her."

After playing from behind in last night's 87-83 win over the same club, the Seawolves led for all but nine seconds of the rematch, forging a 35-31 halftime advantage.

UAA wasted no time after the break, getting a pull-up jumper from Nicole Pinckney on the opening possession and capping an 11-2 run on a steal and layup by Rabb to take control.

Pinckney fed Tovia for a layup that made it 51-36 with 3:34 left in the third, and the hosts stretched their largest lead to 60-38 with 10 minutes to go.

Pinckney finished with seven points, six assists and no turnovers, while sophomore forward Kate Robertson tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds.

A sophomore forward from Las Vegas, Tovia delivered her best game in a Seawolf uniform, tying or setting career highs with five points (2-4 FG), five rebounds and five assists, along with no turnovers and a plus-17 plus/minus figure in 18 minutes.

Hajdukovich shot 3 of 6 from long range, grabbed six rebounds and dished three assists without a turnover, while Jazzpher Evans finished with seven points, four rebounds and two steals.

The Seawolves return to the court next week for their final non-conference games, taking on unbeaten West Region foe Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sunday, Dec. 18 in Carson, Calif., and Bethesda on Monday, Dec. 19 in Anaheim, Calif. Both games start at noon AST, with live video and stats links available at GoSeawolves.com.
