ANCHORAGE – Senior forward
Vishe' Rabb had 14 points and 11th-ranked Alaska Anchorage delivered a gritty defensive effort Saturday to earn a 62-54 women's basketball victory over Seattle Pacific at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (6-1, 1-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points apiece from guards
Jazzpher Evans and
Jahnna Hajdukovich as they used a 28-7 advantage on points off turnovers to earn the win.
The Falcons (3-3, 1-1) were led by 12 points and four assists from guard Anna Eddy, but lost despite outshooting the hosts 46.5 percent (20 of 43) to 36.5 percent (23 of 63).
"We got back to doing what we needed to do defensively tonight, and it paid big dividends," said UAA
Ryan McCarthy, who earned his 250th win his 12th season as UAA's head coach. "Our shots weren't falling, but we also did a great job with 11 offensive boards, which led to some critical baskets. I'm proud of the way we responded after a tough loss and we're excited to keep building on this win."
Coming off Thursday's 68-61 loss to regionally ranked Montana State Billings, the Seawolves found themselves in another hole after 10 minutes, trailing 20-13 when the Falcons scored the last seven points of the first quarter.
The Seawolves would lock down defensively at that stage, holding the visitors to 1-of-9 shooting and forcing 10 turnovers in the second quarter to grab a 30-23 halftime lead. The three points scored by SPU broke UAA's program record for fewest allowed in second quarter against an NCAA Div. II opponent and marked the second-fewest allowed against a D-II foe in any quarter.
The Seawolves took their largest lead at 45-33 when
Rachel Ingram drove baseline for a layup with 2:30 left in the third quarter, and continued to hold the Falcons at arm's length from there.
SPU crept within 47-41 on Eddy's three-pointer with 9:30 left in the game, but UAA responded with two free throws by Rabb and back-to-back baskets by
Anaiah Moore and
Kate Robertson to reclaim control.
Rabb finished with a game-high eight rebounds, while Robertson contributed eight points on 4-of-5 shooting, six rebounds and two steals.
A transfer from Div. I Milwaukee, Moore finished with four points and tallied her most assists (6) and steals (4) thus far as a Seawolf.
Evans added four assists and three steals, and Hajdukovich had three assists for UAA, which returns to non-conference play next weekend with two games against William Jewell (Sat., 7 p.m. and Sun., 5 p.m.) at the Alaska Airlines Center.
