LOWELL, MASS. – Jared Whale made 52 saves and Maximilion Helgeson tallied one goal and two assists to lead Alaska Anchorage to a 4-2 upset win at No. 13 UMass Lowell Friday.
"We got a great goaltending performance out of (Jared) Whale and some timely scoring tonight," said head coach Matt Shasby. "I thought we had the right mindset heading into the second half and played a patient game. This will be the formula for us moving forward. Very proud of our group."
Owen Fowler scored the first goal of the game at 6:52 of the first period to give the River Hawks the early lead.
Dylan Finlay fired a low shot past Lowell goalie Henry Welsch on the powerplay at 2:52 of the second period to tie the game at 1-1.
Jared Whale stopped a shot by Owen Fowler, but Brian Chambers put in the rebound at 12:27 of the second period to give UML its second lead of the night.
William Gilson tied the game at 2-2 when he fired a low shot from the slot at 8:31 of the third period.
The Seawolves took the lead after Brett Bamber fired a low shot past Welsch, who had lost his stick, for his third goal of the season at 11:15 of the third period.
UAA extended its lead to 4-2 when Maximilion Helgeson scored the empty-net goal with 66 seconds remaining.
The win was the first career win for Jared Whale, who was the first UAA goalie to make 50 saves since Olivier Mantha made 50 saves at Ferris State on Feb. 18, 2017.
Maximilion Helgeson led the Seawolves with three points (one goal, two assists), while Ben Almquist and Connor Marritt each finished with two assists. Eight different players finished with a point for UAA.
The River Hawks finished with a 54-12 advantage in shots.
UAA finished 1-for-3 on the powerplay, and held UML scoreless on both of their powerplay opportunities.
The win was the second for the Seawolves over a ranked opponent this season, after defeating No. 14 Western Michigan 3-1 on Oct. 1st.
The two teams will close out the weekend series Saturday.
