FAIRBANKS, ALASKA – Ben Almquist and Carson Kosobud each scored for Alaska Anchorage in a 5-2 loss at Alaska Fairbanks in the first game of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup.
"We got to see what we are in for related to our in-state rival," said head coach Matt Shasby. "UAF is a very strong opponent, who is well coached. We will take a look at the film and make the necessary adjustments and try to earn a split tomorrow."
Brady Risk opened the scoring with a power-play goal for the Nanooks at 7:49 of the first period.
The two teams traded goals in a second period that featured five goals.
Zachary Power scored on the doorstep at 2:21 for UAF, but Ben Almquist answered scoring on the rebound of a shot by Caleb Hite at 4:30. Conor Cole earned an assist for UAA.
Brady Risk scored his second goal of the game, again on the powerplay, with a wrist shot just under the cross bar at 6:49. UAF finished 2-for-4 on the powerplay, and UAA was scoreless on both of its powerplay chances.
Carson Kosobud scored 44 seconds later thanks to an assist from Brandon Lajoie to cut the UAF lead to 3-2.
Harrison Israels scored the final goal of the period at 16:03 for the Nanooks.
The Seawolves pulled goalie Nolan Kent with just over three minutes remaining, but UAF scored the empty-net goal at 18:25. Kent finished with 35 saves for UAA.
Fairbanks finished with a 40-20 lead in shots.
The two teams will faceoff for game two of six in the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Saturday at 7:07 pm.
