Wildcats take OT thriller in Ellensburg, 81-80

ELLENSBURG, Wash. – Junior guard Tobin Karlberg delivered his first career double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team fell victim to a last-second shot by Central Washington's Xavier Smith in an 81-80 overtime loss Saturday at Nicholson Pavilion.

The Seawolves (11-7, 6-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 17 points, nine rebounds and four assists from senior center Oggie Pantovic as they lost despite holding the lead for all but 52 seconds.

The Wildcats (14-6, 8-5) were led by a game-high 26 points on 10-of-19 shooting from Smith, who sank a runner along the baseline with 3.2 seconds left in the extra session. Colby Garrett added 10 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks for the hosts.

Junior guard A.J. Garrity tallied all 12 of his career-point points in the first half, giving UAA a 41-34 lead when he grabbed the ball off a wild scramble and nailed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Pantovic scored on a second-chance layup to give the Seawolves their largest lead of the second half, 56-47, with 9:50 remaining. The Wildcats slowly chipped away at their deficit, however, and tied it 65-65 on Smith's jumper with 3:10 showing.

After retaking the lead on three straight points from Pantovic, UAA senior Hunter Sweet made it a 70-67 cushion when he rolled in a short jumper with 23 seconds left. Luck would be on the home side, though, as Smith banked in a fadeaway three-pointer just nine ticks later, and Sweet missed an off-balance trey at the regulation buzzer.

The Seawolves would continue to hold the lead throughout overtime, taking a 75-72 on a layup by Pantovic, but UAA's All-America candidate would foul out on the ensuing defensive possession.

The game remained a one-possession affair for the entire overtime, with Smith giving the Wildcats a 79-78 edge on a jumper with 13 seconds remaining. UAA senior point guard David Rowlands was fouled on an inbounds play with 9.9 seconds left and converted both free throws, but Smith took the ball the length of the court for the winning basket. Without a timeout, the Seawolves got the ball to Karlberg for a midcourt heave that sailed wide.

Karlberg did most of his damage in the opening 10 minutes and grabbed five steals, while Pantovic shot 8 of 13 from the field.

Sweet finished with 14 points and four rebounds, and Rowlands had 11 points.

The Seawolves complete their three-game road trip Monday with a 1 p.m. AST matinee against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
