Seawolf rally nets sweet road win over SFU

BURNABY, British Columbia – Junior guard Tobin Karlberg scored 15 of his 17 points after halftime, including the go-ahead basket with two minutes remaining, to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team rally for a 75-70 victory over Simon Fraser on Monday at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (12-7, 7-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points, four assists and three steals from senior point guard David Rowlands as they erased a 13-point second-half deficit and swept the season series from SFU.

Simon Fraser (11-11, 6-8) was led by 14 points and 11 rebounds from guard Wilfried Balata, but the hosts were forced into 17 turnovers and could not capitalize on a 40-26 rebounding advantage.

"We fell behind early, but I knew our guys would never quit, and we were clearly the stronger team down the stretch," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "Playing for the second time in three weeks without one of the best players in the nation, we stuck to our game plan and earned a big win on the road again. I couldn't be prouder of this group."

Playing their third road game in five days – and missing All-GNAC center Oggie Pantovic due to technicalities with the Canadian border crossing – the Seawolves fell behind 21-11 after nine minutes. Junior forward Keegan Crosby pulled UAA within 26-24 with his second three-pointer, however, and the Seawolves stayed within striking distance, trailing 41-32 at halftime.

SFU stretched its largest lead to 54-41 on a layup by Jordan Lyons with 13:19 remaining, and still led 67-57 when he made two free throws at the 5:49 mark.

After a hook shot from Vojtech Ruzek, Karlberg delivered a baseball pass to Rowlands for a fastbreak basket that would change the game. Balata was called for a flagrant foul on the play, leading to an extra free throw and a four-point play by Rowlands to make it 67-63.

Rowlands stole the ball and fed Karlberg for a three-pointer with 4:15 left, and junior forward Darius Guinn capped the 11-0 run with a layup to give UAA its first lead of the day at 68-67.

SFU reclaimed the lead on two more Lyons free throws, but Karlberg put UAA ahead to stay with a spinning jump shot in the lane with 1:56 left.

Clinging to a 73-70 lead with under 20 seconds remaining, Karlberg helped clinch the victory when his effort play led to an offensive rebound for Hunter Sweet, resulting in the game-clinching free throws.

Crosby finished with a career-best 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting (2-5 3FG), along with a team-high seven rebounds. The Seattle native also had three assists, a key steal and just one turnover in a team-high 34 minutes.

Karlberg shot 7-of-12 from the floor and grabbed four rebounds, while Sweet had eight points, five rebounds and two steals. UAA also got significant contributions off the bench from junior guard A.J. Garrity (7 points), sophomore guard Caleb Larsen (5 points, 3-4 FT), Guinn (4 points, 2 rebounds) and Ruzek (4 points, 1-1 FG, 2-2 FT).

Should no further games be rescheduled, the Seawolves will be home for their final three regular-season contests at the Alaska Airlines Center. UAA faces Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 7 p.m., with several promotions available thanks to game-night sponsor ConocoPhillips Alaska.
