Sweet, Seawolves rout Nanooks with big first half

ANCHORAGE – Senior forward Hunter Sweet had 18 points, seven rebounds and a career-high seven assists Saturday to propel the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a monster first-half performance and a 95-72 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (13-7, 8-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a career-high 19 points from junior guard A.J. Garrity as they shot 54 percent from the field and 57 percent from long range (19 of 31), equaling the third-most treys against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent in program history.

The Nanooks (7-13, 4-10) were led by 17 points and nine rebounds from forward Abdul Mohamed as they remained winless on the road in GNAC play.

"I thought finally having some rest and getting a few consecutive good practices in this week was a boost for us tonight," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team played nine games between Jan. 27 and Feb. 14. "Hunter was huge in the first half, and not just with his scoring, but also rebounding and distributing the ball to our other shooters. Hopefully we can keep some of this momentum going as we head into our last two games and the GNAC Tournament."

Coming off a fourth-quarter comeback victory over Simon Fraser on Monday, the Seawolves trailed for only 27 seconds against their oldest rivals, taking the lead for good on a three-pointer by Tobin Karlberg after three minutes.

UAF guard Shadeed Shabazz pulled the visitors within 21-18 at the 12:38 mark, but the Seawolves responded with a crushing 19-0 run, capping the surge when Sweet stole the ball and fed senior guard David Rowlands for a fastbreak trey with 6:03 on the first-half clock.

Garrity delivered the dagger right before halftime, hitting a running three-pointer and drawing the foul for a four-point play to make it 55-29 at the break.

Garrity shot 6 of 8 from long range, along with four rebounds, three assists and no turnovers. The Santiago Canyon (Calif.) Junior College transfer tallied his career-high in scoring for the second time in the last three games, while tying his most assists as a Seawolf.

Rowlands finished with 14 points (5-8 FG, 4-6 3FG) and six assists, while junior guard Tobin Karlberg was right on his team-high scoring average with 18 points (6-10 FG, 4-7 3FG).

The victory was UAA's 28th in its last 30 meetings against UAF, extending its series dominance to 85-23 overall and 49-5 at home, including 7-0 at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves complete their regular season next week with two more games at the Alaska Airlines Center, hosting Western Oregon on Thursday (5:15 p.m. AST) and Saint Martin's on Saturday, Feb. 26 (7:30 p.m AST). Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets.

The top six teams in the final regular-season standings will receive first-round byes into the quarterfinals of the GNAC Tournament, set for Mar. 2-5 in Seattle and Lacey, Wash.
