FAIRBANKS, Alaska – Senior center
Tennae Voliva scored a career-high 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to its sixth straight victory, knocking off Alaska Fairbanks 74-62 at the Patty Center.
The Seawolves (16-4, 9-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points from freshman guard
Jazzpher Evans as they turned 18 offensive rebounds into a 19-4 advantage in second-chance points.
The Nanooks (2-16, 1-12) were led by 12 points from forward Caitlin Pusich, plus eight points and 14 rebounds from center Ellen Silva. UAF shot a blazing 53 percent (10 of 19) on three-pointers to stoke a late rally, but the hosts could not overcome 30 turnovers.
"It was important for us to assert control early, because Fairbanks is a much better team than its record indicates, and we didn't want to give them any life or momentum," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose program stretched its winning streak to 28 over its lone in-state rival. "Tennae and Jazz continue to step up their games offensively, but we've got to do a better job closing out games with more discipline on both ends of the floor."
Playing the second of five straight road games, the Seawolves shot 58 percent in the first quarter to lead 27-17. Evans – who scored her most points in a UAA uniform since transferring from Quincy (Ill.) University – made her first four shots as UAA pushed the lead to 45-31 at halftime.
Senior
Lauren Johnson scored two of her eight points to stretch the largest advantage to 58-40 late in the third quarter, but the Nanooks would not go quietly, shaving it to 60-53 on back-to-back baskets from Pusich and Claudia Diez Marti with 5:12 remaining.
Seawolf sophomore
Rachel Ingram answered 17 seconds later, converting a traditional three-point play, and Voliva earned two free throws to stretch it 65-53 at the 4:24 mark.
Voliva shot 7 of 15 from the field and 9 of 11 at the free-throw line to top her previous high of 20 points. The East Anchorage High School product added four assists and two steals, while recording her fourth double-double this season.
Johnson added a career-high five rebounds, and senior forward
Sala Langi contributed seven points (3-6 FG), four assists and five steals, without committing a turnover.
Ingram had six points and a career-high three steals, and junior forward
Kimani Fernandez added four points (2-3 FG) and six rebounds.
The Seawolves return to the Lower 48 this week for their final three road games of the regular season, starting with Thursday (6 p.m. AST) contest against Simon Fraser in Burnaby, British Columbia. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
