ANCHORAGE – Senior center
Oggie Pantovic scored 30 points and dished a career-high six assists Saturday, helping the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team thwart a late Western Washington comeback in an 81-75 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (10-5, 5-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points and four rebounds apiece from
Tobin Karlberg and
Hunter Sweet as they snapped a five-game losing streak against the Vikings and avenged Monday's overtime loss in Bellingham, Wash.
The Vikings (11-8, 4-5) were led by 24 points from guard D'Angelo Minnis, plus 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting and 11 rebounds from center Luke Lovelady.
"I'm proud of our effort tonight," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team finished 50 percent (30 of 60) from the floor after an 8-of-23 start. "It's not easy to bring consistent energy during this tough stretch of games every other day. We made some mistakes, but stayed resilient and together."
Despite the close final margin, the Seawolves led for all but 69 seconds, taking the advantage for good at 25-24 on a deep three-pointer by
David Rowlands at the 6:49 mark of the first half.
The Seawolves opened the second half with an 8-2 surge to go up 45-35, and earned their largest lead at 58-43 on a Sweet layup with 12:27 remaining. A senior transfer from Concordia-Portland, Sweet nailed a three-pointer with 10:48 on the clock to make it 61-48 and surpass a combined 1,000 career points at Concordia and UAA.
The Vikings would not fold, however, slicing their deficit to 63-57 with 7:49 left and getting five straight points from Minnis to draw within 72-67 with 3:56 to play. Sweet was there with another answer for UAA, sinking a trey on a kick-out pass from Pantovic just 29 seconds later, and the Seawolves made 5 of 6 free throws in the final two minutes to clinch the victory.
"Teams have been taking away the three the last few games, but Oggie is starting to get comfortable again after missing 10 days of practice and the Billings game (on Jan. 27), so we have even more versatility in our offense now. I'm also really happy for
Hunter Sweet to score his 1,000th career point in the Green & Gold. He is such a great teammate and a true pleasure to coach and be around each day."
After making 10 of 13 shots in Thursday's 71-59 win over Simon Fraser, Pantovic followed by sinking 12 of 19 against the Vikings, along with 5 of 6 free throws and a team-high seven rebounds. It marked the second 30-point scoring effort of the Serb's career, along with his career-high 33 points against the same opponent, Feb. 8, 2020 in Bellingham.
Sweet shot 3 of 6 from long range and Karlberg went 4 of 7 from the field and 4 of 4 at the foul stripe, while junior guard A.J. Garrity matched his career high with nine points on 4-of-7 shooting off the bench.
