ANCHORAGE – Junior guard
Tobin Karlberg scored 18 points and the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team outscored Montana State Billings 21-6 over the final 11 minutes Tuesday to earn a 64-57 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (11-5, 6-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 17 points and seven rebounds from senior forward
Hunter Sweet as they remained unbeaten at home and swept the season series from Billings. Combined with Saint Martin's loss earlier in the evening, the victory also moved UAA percentage points above the Saints atop the GNAC standings.
The Yellowjackets (10-11, 6-5) got a game-high 25 points on 7-of-11 three-point shooting from starting guard Damen Thacker, but the rest of the visitors made only 3 of 20 treys, and they were outrebounded 35-26.
"We earned a good win against a very well coached and disciplined team," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team drilled 14-of-28 three-pointers. "We knew they would bounce back after last night in Fairbanks because that's what good teams do. We were not as sharp tonight and they did a good job of taking Oggie (Pantovic) out of our offense. But as we talked about when you take him out, you leave our shooters open. On Saturday (an 81-75 win over Western Washington), the shooters were taken away and Oggie thrived. Tonight was the opposite, but we still managed to get the win."
One night after shooting 21 percent in a 62-36 loss to Alaska Fairbanks, the visitors came out smoking-hot, making seven of their first eight shots and grabbing an 18-9 lead. The Seawolves answered with nine straight points, grabbing their first advantage at 25-24 on a Sweet three-pointer at the 6:48 mark.
UAA led 31-30 at halftime before Billings surged back ahead, going up 44-38 on a Thacker trey and 50-41 on two free throws by Malik Brikat with 11:57 remaining. Karlberg would answer with a personal 8-2 run that included an NBA-range trey, and Sweet fed A.J. Garrity for a go-ahead three-pointer from the corner that made it 57-55 with 5:46 left.
Senior point guard
David Rowlands scored twice in the paint to extend the lead to 61-55 with 2:09 remaining, and Sweet delivered the final dagger, nailing a deep three to beat the shot clock with 26 seconds left for the final points of the game.
Karlberg shot 4 of 9 from long range and 6 of 14 overall, while tying his career high with nine rebounds. The local Grace Christian High School product added three assists and two steals, committing only one turnover in a 40-minute stint.
Sweet made 5 of 6 from long range and added seven rebounds and two assists, while Rowlands finished with 10 points, four assists and just one turnover.
Junior guard A.J. Garrity contributed eight points off the bench on a night when Pantovic – the reigning GNAC Player of the Week – was held to a season-low five points. The senior center was able to contribute in other ways, however, dishing four assists and grabbing six rebounds.
The Seawolves begin a three-game road trip Thursday in Nampa, Idaho, against Northwest Nazarene. Tip is set for 3:15 p.m. AST, with live video and stats links available at GoSeawolves.com.
