Seawolves tame Wolves for 5th straight win, 73-65

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Jahnna Hajdukovich and Tennae Voliva scored 16 points apiece and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team stayed hot from three-point range Tuesday, earning its fifth straight victory with a 73-65 decision over Western Oregon at the New P.E. Building.

The Seawolves (15-4, 8-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got nine points, four rebounds and two steals from senior forward Lauren Johnson as they forged an early lead and thwarted several late WOU rallies.

The Wolves (8-10, 4-7) got a game-high 17 points from guard Cali McClave, along with 11 points from forward Meadow Aragon, but the hosts were outshot .438 (7 of 16) to .273 (6 of 22) from long range and outscored 30-13 at the free-throw line.

"We did a nice job of sticking to our scouting report and executing well out of the gate, but we need to be more consistent throughout the 40 minutes," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team shot 50 percent on three-pointers in its two home victories last week. "I'm really happy with how our shooters are putting behind their struggles that occurred after our Covid layoff, and are releasing their shots with confidence now."

Looking to extend their program-record 33-game winning streak against WOU, the Seawolves took a 20-12 advantage after one quarter. The Wolves would slice it to 20-19 in the opening minutes of the second quarter, but junior guard Nicole Pinckney sank a three-pointer to stem the tide, and UAA took a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

The Seawolves led by double figures for most of the second half, taking a 50-40 advantage after three quarters and grabbing their largest lead, 57-42, on a Hajdukovich trey with 7:12 remaining.

McClave sank a three with 2:40 on the clock to make it 62-56, but Voliva answered with two free throws, and the Wolves never got back within two possessions.

A senior center from East Anchorage High School, Voliva shot 4 of 8 from the field and 8 of 8 at the charity stripe, along with a game-high seven rebounds.

Another local product from Dimond High School, Hajdukovich produced her second-most points this season, shooting 4 of 5 on threes and 4 of 4 on free throws.

Johnson shot 2 of 3 from the field and 5 of 7 at the stripe, matching her career high with four rebounds, and junior forward Kimani Fernandez chipped in six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Tuesday's game was a rescheduled affair from Dec. 4.

The Seawolves continue their longest-ever GNAC road swing – five games – when they visit Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday at 3 p.m. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
