ATLANTA – The Alaska Anchorage women's basketball program capped its 2021-22 season with a pair of national honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches' Association on Wednesday, with senior
Tennae Voliva earning honorable mention All-America recognition and
Ryan McCarthy named the West Region's finalist for WBCA NCAA Div. II National Coach of the Year.
A 6-foot center, Voliva added Wednesday's award to a haul that includes First Team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference and Third Team Academic All-America honors. With six double-doubles, the East Anchorage High School product helped UAA finish 20-7 overall and 12-4 in the GNAC, barely missing its seventh straight regular-season league title. Voliva paced the Seawolves in virtually every category except three-point shooting, posting top-12 GNAC ranks in scoring (12.9 ppg, 9th), rebounding (7.0 rpg, 8th), steals (2.1 spg, 3rd), blocks (0.7 bpg, 12th), field-goal percentage (.479, 9th) and free-throw percentage (.829, 3rd). She was also second on the team with 1.8 assists per game.
A three-year starter, Voliva finished with UAA top-10 career ranks in rebounds (654, 8th), steals (170, 10th), blocks (79, 7th), free throws made (9th, 261), games played (t-6th, 127) and victories (t-5th, 110), while placing 20th on the Seawolves' scoring list with 921 points.
Meanwhile, McCarthy picked up his fifth West Region coach-of-the-year honor since 2014-15 after piloting UAA to its eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Despite having just one player who averaged more than eight points and four rebounds per game, the Seawolves posted the best winning percentage in this year's unbalanced GNAC schedule, including regular-season sweeps of fellow NCAA qualifiers Central Washington and Northwest Nazarene.
