ANCHORAGE –
Eve Stephens produced nine kills and five aces on a record-setting night for the Alaska Anchorage senior, leading the 16th-ranked Seawolves to a 25-21, 25-11, 25-18 volleyball sweep of Western Oregon on Saturday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
A local product from nearby Palmer, Stephens also tied for team-high honors with eight digs and four total blocks as she surpassed the Great Northwest Athletic Conference's all-time kills record. The Colony High School grad finished the night with 1,630 career kills, breaking the record of former Western Washington star Abby Phelps, who had 1,628 kills from 2015-18.
Lisa Jaunet added seven kills and fellow senior
Ellen Floyd produced 28 assists, eight digs and three block assists to help UAA improve to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in the GNAC.
Coming off a five-set upset at Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday night, the Wolves (5-5, 1-1) could not continue their momentum, committing 36 combined errors and hitting -.022 for the match.
"That wasn't our prettiest offensive effort again, but we will take the result," said UAA head coach
Chris Green. "I'm really happy for Eve to achieve the GNAC kills record. Since her first day as a freshman, she's worked hard to improve every facet of her game. You can't attain a record of this magnitude without great dedication, and she is a testament to that."
Tied 5-5 in the opening set, Stephens tipped a kill off the WOU block and followed with three straight aces, sparking a 9-0 Seawolf run.
The visitors trailed just 15-11 midway through the second, but a Wolves service error opened the door on another huge run as UAA scored 10 consecutive points to finish the frame. Stephens produced a pair of kills during the surge and WOU was held to -.269 hitting in the set.
The Seawolves fell behind 6-1 to begin the third, before Stephens stopped the skid with the record-tying kill. The record-breaking kill came appropriately on a tiebreaking point, with Stephens putting her team ahead for good at 12-11.
WOU continued to keep it close, drawing within 17-16 on a kill by Bailee Hartsook, but Stephens answered with her final kill and teamed with
Leilani Elder on a block to make it 20-16. Sophomore outside hitter
Nicole Blue sandwiched kills around Stephens' final ace to close the match.
Blue finished with six kills and four digs, Elder had five kills and four total blocks, and senior libero
Talia Leauanae had eight digs and two aces for UAA, which held a GNAC opponent to negative hitting for the first time since Oct. 20, 2018 (-.008 vs. Simon Fraser).
In addition to Stephens' accomplishment, Floyd climbed another rung up the GNAC's career assists ladder, moving past Western Washington's Liz Bishop (4,176 assists, 2000-03) for third place on that list. Already UAA's career leader, Floyd finished the weekend with 4,202.
The Seawolves make their first GNAC road trip of the season next week with matches Thursday (5 p.m. ADT) at Montana State Billings and Saturday (1 p.m. ADT) at Seattle Pacific. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to live video and stats.
