#16 Seawolves halt Saints' streak in GNAC-opening sweep

ANCHORAGE – Senior Eve Stephens recorded a double-double and sophomore Leilani Elder returned to the lineup with a big effort Thursday to help the 16th-ranked Alaska Anchorage volleyball team to a 25-15, 25-17, 25-23 sweep of Saint Martin's in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference opener at the Alaska Airlines Center.

Stephens tallied 10 kills, 11 digs and three of UAA's 10 aces to help offset a season-low .120 hitting percentage by the Seawolves (11-1, 1-0 GNAC), while senior outside hitter Lisa Jaunet added eight kills.

The Saints (9-1, 0-1) were led by eight kills from sophomore outside hitter Tia Allen, but the visitors from Lacey, Wash., managed just .058 hitting themselves and were hurt by nine service errors.

"We were very fortunate the service game went our way on a night when our offense was not running well otherwise," said UAA's Chris Green, who recorded his 750th career coaching victory, including 453 wins in nine junior-college seasons at Western Nebraska Community College.

Tied 12-12 in the opening set, UAA used two straight Saints attack errors to start a 6-0 run. The Seawolves closed with five straight points, including a pair of kills by setter Ellen Floyd.

The hosts extended their lead gradually throughout the second set behind the play of Elder, who produced kills on all three of her attacks and added a block assist in the frame. Returning from an injury that kept her out last week, the Kansas City, Mo., native finished with five kills and a team-high four total blocks.

Tied 19-19 in the third, UAA benefited from SMU's final service error to take the lead for good, followed by a solo block from Emma Patterson and an ace by Makana Eleneki. The Saints would draw within 23-22 on consecutive blocks by Maddy Gooding and Loredana Fouonji, but Patterson delivered a kill moments later on the Seawolves' second try at match point.

Floyd finished with 25 assists and two aces, while Eleneki had a pair of aces and no service errors. Senior libero Talia Leauanae paced UAA with 13 digs.

Meanwhile, Stephens raised her career kills total to 1,621, drawing closer to the GNAC record of 1,628 by Western Washington's Abby Phelps from 2015-18.

The Seawolves' victory extended the longest head-to-head win streak in program history to 28 against the Saints, who have not beaten UAA since 2007.

UAA returns to the Alaska Airlines Center for a Saturday 7 p.m. first serve against Western Oregon (5-4, 1-0), which won 3-2 (15-10) in its league opener at Alaska Fairbanks. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for links to tickets, live video and live stats.
