ANCHORAGE – Junior guard
Hayley Berfield delivered 15 points and sophomore forward
Kate Robertson scored 12 points Saturday to power the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 68-58 victory over Northwest Nazarene at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (11-5, 3-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got career highs of seven rebounds and four assists from Berfield as they snapped a two-game losing skid.
The Nighthawks (8-8, 4-4) were led by 19 points and six rebounds from reserve forward Danika Starr but could not capitalize on a 36-29 rebounding edge.
"We were playing short-handed again tonight, but our ladies didn't let that phase them and delivered a great team effort on both ends of the court," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, who won for a sixth straight time against his alma mater. "I think it was critical that we got off to that good start and made them expend a lot of energy subsequently. We only had nine steals, but our pressure really paid off defensively and forced NNU into a lot of mistakes."
After allowing the first 10 points in Thursday's 71-47 loss to Central Washington, the Seawolves flipped the script with a 9-0 run to begin the game.
A transfer from Div. I High Point, Berfield made both of her three-point tries in the first quarter as UAA extended to a 20-7 lead. The visitors from Idaho shaved their deficit to 27-21 midway through the second quarter, but senior guards
Rachel Ingram and
Ra'Anaa Bey nailed consecutive threes late in the half for a 40-26 advantage at the break.
Ingram swished another trey to push the lead to 49-28 with seven minutes left in the third quarter as the hosts led by double figures the rest of the way.
Berfield made 4 of 5 three-point tries and committed just one turnover in 26 minutes in her second career starting assignment.
Robertson – a transfer from Casper (Wyo.) College – shot 6 of 9 from the field as the Seawolves connected for a season-high .466 (27 of 58) field-goal percentage, including 9-of-21 (.429) from deep.
Senior guard
Jahnna Hajdukovich registered eight points, five rebounds, five assists and no turnovers before fouling out, and sophomore guard
Jazzpher Evans had eight points, four assists, no turnovers and three steals.
UAA played for the second time in three games without the services of leading scorer and rebounder
Vishe' Rabb, who sat out with an injury.
