Saints edge Seawolves in final seconds in Lacey

LACEY, Wash. – Alaska Anchorage senior guard Nicole Pinckney scored 13 points but a second-half comeback was thwarted Saturday as host Saint Martin's scored in the final seconds for a 66-65 women's basketball victory at Marcus Pavilion.

The Seawolves (12-6, 4-5 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points from senior forward Vishe' Rabb, who gave the visitors the lead on a layup with 11 seconds remaining.

The Saints (7-10, 3-6) were led by 16 points from guard Kiana Rios, who was fouled on an inbounds play and converted both free throws with 2.4 seconds left for the winning points. Saint Martin's also got 15 points and eight assists from Anjel Galbraith as it shot 7 of 10 on three-pointers, snapping a 13-game losing streak to UAA since a victory in the 2014 GNAC Tournament.

"We can't show up to games like we did today," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team was outrebounded 19-10 in the opening half and trailed 37-31 at the break. "Every time we went away from our game plan, they punished us as any team should do. Until we learn that lesson, we will struggle to meet the standard of our program."

Despite trailing 26-15 early in the second quarter, UAA rallied with an 11-0 run capped by a Jahnna Hadukovich three-pointer.

UAA trailed by eight points early in the third, but the Seawolves got two three-pointers from Pinckney and Anaiah Moore swished a short jumper at the buzzer for a 50-48 lead going into the fourth.

The final quarter featured three ties and seven lead changes, with Saint Martin's taking a 64-63 lead into the final 30 seconds. Kimani Fernandez rebounded a short miss by Rios to give UAA possession, and assisted on Rabb's go-ahead layin moments later.

Fernandez knocked the ball out of bounds under the basket with four seconds left, but the senior forward was whistled for the foul when Rios caught the inbound lob, spun and drove to the basket.

UAA advanced the ball to the frontcourt with a timeout, but Chenoa Louie was there to block Hajdukovich's three-point attempt from the wing.

Hajdukovich finished with 11 points on 5-of-10 shooting and team highs of seven assists and four rebounds, while Jazzpher Evans tallied eight points, four assists and two steals.

The Seawolves return home for two games next week, starting with a Thursday 7 p.m. tip against Simon Fraser at the Alaska Airlines Center.
