Nighthawks edge Seawolves in defensive battle

NAMPA, Idaho – Senior guard Da'Zhon Wyche scored nine points to lead a late comeback attempt, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team fell short Saturday in a 48-47 loss to Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Center.

The Seawolves (8-6, 2-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got eight points and four assists from Idaho native Sawyer Storms as their four-game winning streak was stopped.

The Nighthawks (6-8, 3-3) were led by 11 points from guard Tru Allen and 11 rebounds from forward Gabriel Murphy as they held the visitors to 32 percent shooting and earned a 42-30 rebounding advantage.

Coming off their best offensive performance of the season in Thursday's 90-72 victory over Central Washington, the Seawolves could never get rolling Saturday, despite leading the ballgame for nearly 29 minutes.

UAA stretched a four-point halftime lead to 31-24 on Jaedon Bradley's free throw with 17:26 remaining. A Tyson Gilbert midrange jumper made it 37-33 at the 11:10 mark, but the Seawolves would miss their next five shots while the Nighthawks went on an 11-0 run.

Trailing 46-40 with under four minutes to play, Wyche penetrated for a floater in the lane, then added two free throws a minute later. The GNAC steals leader swiped the ball at midcourt and sailed in for a layup to make it 48-46 with 1:17 left, and Caleb Larsen split two free throws with 45 seconds to play for the final point of the game.

UAA forced a shot-clock violation on NNU's next possession, but a three-point miss by Dathan Satchell and a turnover off the offensive rebound spelled the last chance for the visitors.

Gilbert finished with seven points and seven rebounds for UAA, Bradley had six points and eight rebounds, and Jaron Williams added four points and four steals off the bench.

The Seawolves return to action Thursday at 5:15 p.m. against Western Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center. Surf to GoSeawolves.com for tickets and live links.
