Seawolves sweep 'Jackets in Billings

BILLINGS, Mont. (Oct. 28) – Nicole Blue delivered 12 kills and Isabel Evans produced big numbers in her home state as the Alaska Anchorage volleyball team forged a 25-23, 25-23, 25-14 sweep of Montana State Billings at Alterowitz Gymnasium on Saturday.

The Seawolves (13-15, 5-8 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) got six kills on .455 hitting, five total blocks and an ace from Evans – a junior from Corvallis, Mont. – plus seven kills and four block assists from fellow middle blocker Leilani Elder as they snapped a three-match losing skid.

The Yellowjackets (3-20, 1-12) were led by nine kills and four blocks from outside hitter Bailey Nichols, and four aces and 14 digs from libero Christine Funk, but the hosts were limited to .031 hitting and fell victim to 11 Seawolf aces.

"Our serving was really strong all day, and that set us up for success," said UAA head coach Stacie Meisner. "After some tough results lately, it was important for us to get back on track today and hopefully use this to take some momentum into our final five matches."

Seeking a sixth straight sweep in the head-to-head series, the Seawolves took command by leading throughout the opening set. Freshman Bella Burney notched one of her six kills to claim a 24-21 lead, and UAA fought off a late Billings rally when Blue knocked a kill off the Yellowjacket block on set point.

The second set was more of a back-and-forth affair, with a similar ending. After 10 ties and seven lead changes, the Seawolves claimed a 24-20 edge when Nichols hit the ball wide. Marissa Allen capped a 3-0 run with a kill to draw the hosts within 24-23, but Elder answered with a kill down the middle for a two-set lead.

UAA dominated the final set, outhitting Billings .265 to -.036 behind four kills on seven swings from Elder.

Junior libero Reilly Plumhoff led UAA with 12 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Sydney Johnson had one of her best days with seven digs, 10-of-10 serve receiving, a career-high five aces and just one service error.

Junior setters Kadyn Osborne and Makana Eleneki combined for 32 assists and 12 digs, and Eleneki served three aces.

The victory was UAA's 25th in the last 26 matches against MSUB, extending its winning streaks to 10 overall and 13 in Billings.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center for three of their final five matches, starting Thursday at 7 p.m. against Western Oregon. Tickets and live links are available at GoSeawolves.com.
