ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Max Helgeson scored with less than one minute remaining in overtime to lift Alaska Anchorage to a 3-2 win over UMass Lowell Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, Ben Almquist found Tanner Schachle in the slot for a goal at 16:13 of the second period.
Matt Allen and Gunnar VanDamme set-up Riley Thompson for his first goal of the season at 11:21 of the first period to give the Seawolves a 2-0 lead.
Matt Crasa scored back-to-back goals for the River Hawks at 14:41 and 18:52 to tie the game at 2-2.
Max Helgeson scored his goal 3-on-3 with 51 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Seawolves the win in their home and season opener.
Jared Whale made 36 saves in his first win of the season for the Seawolves.
"I was proud of our team effort," said head coach Matt Shasby. "I thought everyone contributed in different ways. Jared Whale played a game that allowed us to get a lead and chance to win. I thought our freshmen played really well in their first game."
Lowell out-shot the Seawolves 36-20 in the contest.
UAA was 0-for-1 on the powerplay and held UML scoreless on all five of their powerplay opportunities.
Alaska Anchorage and UMass Lowell will close out the weekend series Sunday at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex.
