ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – Matt Allen scored his first goal of the season on the powerplay but it wasn't enough as UMass Lowell posted a 2-1 win Sunday at the Avis Alaska Sports Complex.
The game was a defensive battle with over forty minutes of scoreless hockey before Nick Rheaume used some fancy stick handling to score the game's first goal at 3:57 of the third period.
Scout Truman fired a wrist shot past Jared Whale at 8:31 of the third period to give Lowell a 2-0 lead. Whale finished with 26 saves.
Matt Allen caught UML goalie Luke Pavicich out of position to score his first goal of the season at 11:10. Gunnar VanDamme recorded his second assist of the season on the goal, and Rowan Miller earned an assist for his first career point at UAA.
"We played a very determined Lowell team tonight, but we gave ourselves a chance late," said head coach Matt Shasby. "Whale was incredible again tonight. As a group, a lot of learning took place this weekend. We are looking forward to our first road trip to Lake Superior State."
Alaska Anchorage finished 1-for-4 on the powerplay while its penalty kill remained perfect on the season holding Lowell scoreless on the man-advantage (0-3).
Lowell finished with a 28-22 lead in shots.
Alaska Anchorage will hit the road for the first time this season for a two-game series at Lake Superior State Oct. 13-14.
