ANCHORAGE (Nov. 18) – Senior forward
Sawyer Storms scored 11 of his 14 points after the break and the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team used another sterling defensive performance Saturday to record a 62-49 victory over UC Merced at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (6-0) also got 13 points from junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos as they forced 18 turnovers and committed only eight of their own.
The Bobcats – who counted the game as an exhibition – were led by 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds from guard Cameron Brown.
After holding the NAIA visitors under 25 percent shooting in an 83-32 rout Friday night, the Seawolves got a much stronger challenge in the rematch. UAA fell behind 14-8 in the opening minutes and needed a second-chance layup by freshman
Sloan Lentfer to take the lead, 28-27, just before halftime.
Barrientos and
Dathan Satchell opened the second half with three-pointers, and UAA earned its first double-digit lead at 46-35 on a
Hasaan Herrington putback with 8:36 remaining. The Bobcats never got closer than nine points the rest of the way, as Herrington,
Jaron Williams and
Tyson Gilbert each finished with seven points for the Seawolves.
Williams also equaled his career high with seven boards, while dishing four assists with just one turnover.
UAA returns to NCAA Div. II competition for the remainder of its schedule, beginning next week with a pair of games against Adams State (Friday & Saturday, both at 7:30 pm) at the Alaska Airlines Center. Visit GoSeawolves.com for tickets and live links.
