ANCHORAGE (Nov. 24) –
Sawyer Storms had 17 points in another fine all-around effort and fellow senior
Tyson Gilbert added 16 points and five assists Friday to propel Alaska Anchorage to an 83-67 men's basketball victory over Adams State at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (7-0) also got 11 points from senior guard
Dathan Satchell and 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting from senior forward
Jaron Williams as they extended the best start in program history.
The Grizzlies (2-3) were led by 18 points and six assists from guard Destan Williams, but the visitors from Alamosa, Colo., were outshot 57 percent (32 of 56) to 39 percent (22 of 56) in the teams' first meeting this century.
"Offensively I thought we showed very good patience and were wise with our shot selection, and defensively we were able to take them out of their game plan for the most part," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose program now owns the second-longest overall win streak in NCAA Div. II at eight in a row.
After trailing 5-2 in the opening moments, the Seawolves took the lead for good with the next 15 points, starting and ending the run with layups from freshman forward
Sloan Lentfer (8 points, 4-5 FG, 4 rebounds).
Gilbert swished a midrange jumper to give the hosts their largest lead at 40-19 with four minutes left before halftime, but the Grizzlies used an 11-2 run to end the first half.
Adams State continued to chop away at its deficit, pulling within 50-49 on a trey by Kolby Walker with 12:51 left. UAA would answer with back-to-back threes of its own as reserve guards
Hasaan Herrington and
Caleb Larsen pushed the advantage back to 56-51 just 50 seconds later, and Larsen scored on a fastbreak feed from Lentfer for a 60-51 lead.
The Grizzlies could get no closer than seven points in the final 10 minutes, with Storms doing most of his damage late. The Idaho native shot 6 of 8 from the field and 4 of 5 at the foul stripe, along with six assists and a game-high seven rebounds.
Herrington had nine points on 4-of-4 shooting, Larsen finished with five points, three assists and no turnovers, and starting point guard
Dillon Barrientos tallied seven points (3-6 FG) and seven assists as UAA converted 25 of its 34 two-point attempts.
