Comeback comes up short at UAF

FAIRBANKS, ALASKA – Alaska Anchorage scored three third period goals but it was not enough to pull off the comeback as they fell 5-4 at Alaska Fairbanks in the second game of the Alaska Airlines Governor's Cup Saturday.

Aiden Westin gave the Seawolves the first lead of the contest with his third goal of the season at 15:04 of the first period.

The Nanooks erased the Seawolves lead with four goals in the second period and a fifth straight goal early in the third period.

Max Helgeson started the UAA comeback with a power-play goal at 5:07, and William Gilson scored his first goal of the season at 10:27.

The Seawolves capitalized on the extra attacker as Riley Thompson scored his first career goal during a scrum in front of the net at 17:39 of the final period.

"We had a decent start but failed to take advantage of multiple special team opportunities to take control of the game," said head coach Matt Shasby. "We can't hand teams leads and expect to win at this level."

The Seawolves finished 1-for-7 on the powerplay, while the Nanooks were 2-for-6 on the man advantage and scored two short-handed goals.

Jared Whale played the first two periods in net for the Seawolves making 15 saves on 19 shots. Joey Lamoreaux started the third period and finished with 10 saves.

UAA finished with a slim lead in shots 32-30.

The Seawolves had 10 different players record a point, including Ben Almquist who extended his point streak to eight games.

Alaska Anchorage will host Robert Morris Nov. 10-11.
