Seawolves blast Gators for 4th straight win

SAN FRANCISCO (Dec. 19) – Senya Rabouin had 14 points and eight assists and Ja'Niah Alexander delivered a pair of career bests with 11 points and five steals Tuesday to power the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team to a 71-51 victory over San Francisco State at the Nasser Family Plaza.

The Seawolves (6-5) also got 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks from junior center Tori Hollingshead as they outboarded the hosts 43-23 for a season-best margin, and earned their fourth straight win.

The Gators (2-7) were led by 15 points, four assists and four steals from guard Alexsandra Alvarado in just their second home game of the season.

"We started out red-hot offensively except for our turnovers, but we were able to lock down defensively in the halfcourt for most of the first half," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose squad overcame nine first-quarter turnovers and 24 total. "Everyone made huge contributions again as we really showed off our balance, and that any player on this team – today it was Ja'Niah and a couple others – can step up and be a difference maker."

The Seawolves trailed briefly at 4-3 in the opening minutes, before using a 12-0 run to take control. Sophomore guard Elaina Mack ended that run with the first of her three three-pointers, and banked home a buzzer-beater from 35 feet to put UAA up 23-15 at the quarter break.

UAA dominated the second by holding SFSU to 3-of-17 shooting to build a 42-22 halftime advantage, and stretched the lead as high as 71-39 with four minutes remaining.

Rabouin shot 5 of 10 from the field and made all three of her free throws, while Alexander was perfect at 3 of 3 from the field and 5 of 5 at the line. Mack finished with 11 points (3-6 3FG), and junior guard Kya Pearson matched her career best with nine rebounds.

The Seawolves have two weeks off before resuming Great Northwest Athletic Conference play on Jan. 4 against nationally ranked Western Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.
