PORTLAND, Ore. (Feb. 28) – The Alaska Anchorage juniors
Tyson Gilbert and
Sawyer Storms both picked up honorable mention accolades Tuesday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference unveiled its 2022-23 men's basketball postseason awards.
A 6-2 guard, Gilbert led the Seawolves with 10.4 points per game, along with 3.1 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.2 steals per game. The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native and Colorado State-Pueblo transfer scored double figures 15 times, including 10 times in the last 13 contests. Gilbert tallied a season-high 18 points on four occasions, including a 7-of-13 shooting effort to spark the Seawolves' Feb. 11 road win over Western Washington and an 18-point, six-assist, no-turnover, two-steal showing against GNAC champ Saint Martin's.
A 6-7 forward, Storms averaged 10.0 points and led the Seawolves with 4.6 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 0.9 blocks per game, while producing a nearly 2-to-1 (80-44) assist-turnover ratio. The Idaho Falls, Idaho, native and Chaminade transfer also shot .554 from the field, making him the only GNAC player in the league's top 10 in both field-goal percentage and assists per game. Storms scored 23 points in UAA's win over Westminster and 21 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the Western Washington win, along with 13 points in each of UAA's victories over Central Washington.
Gilbert and Storms are among nine players slated to return to the Seawolf roster in 2023-24, which would give UAA 86 percent of its scoring from its season-ending lineup.
