PORTLAND, Ore. (Jan. 5) – Anchorage senior
Hasaan Herrington was named Monday as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week for men's basketball after leading the Seawolves to a pair of victories in their league home openers.
A 6-3 guard, Herrington averaged 17.5 points on 57 percent shooting, 5.0 rebounds, 7.0 assists, 3.0 steals and just 1.5 turnovers as UAA earned an 80-71 win over Simon Fraser and a 90-56 victory over Western Washington.
On Thursday, the East Anchorage High School product scored a season-high 19 points (8-12 FG, 1-2 3FG, 2-2 FT), along with five rebounds, four assists and a career-high-tying four steals against the Red Leafs. He followed with 16 points (4-9 FG, 7-8 FT), five rebounds, a career-high 10 assists and two steals Saturday, notching his first collegiate double-double and helping UAA to its largest margin of victory over WWU in 51 meetings. He was also the primary defender on the opposition's leading scorer both nights, holding SFU's Mikyle Malabuyoc to 10 points (3-9 FG) and 3 turnovers, and WWU's Aidan Rice to four points (2-11 FG) and three turnovers.
"Hasaan is playing at a high level on both ends of the floor," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "He is the most efficient ball handler in the country (NCAA Div. II-best 5.7/1 assist-turnover ratio) and is one of the best defenders as well. He sets the tone defensively, guarding the other team's best guard. Offensively he was highly efficient once again, understood when to facilitate and when to look to score himself. He had an outstanding weekend."
It is the first GNAC Player of the Week honor for Herrington and the first for a Seawolf this season.
Winners of four in a row, the Seawolves (11-4, 3-1 GNAC) return to the road this week to face Northwest Nazarene (Thur., 5:30 pm AST) and Central Washington (Sat., 6:15 pm AST). Find live video ($) and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
