Women fall in OT despite Rabb's career night

NAMPA, Idaho – Senior forward Vishe' Rabb scored a career-high 35 points but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not hold on to a fourth-quarter lead Thursday, falling 78-75 in overtime to Northwest Nazarene at the Johnson Sports Complex.

The Seawolves (14-8, 6-7 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 13 points and eight rebounds from senior guard Jahnna Hajdukovich as they settled for a split of the season series with NNU.

The Nighthawks (10-12, 6-8) were led by 25 points and eight rebounds from center Clare Eubanks, plus 17 points and nine rebounds from forward Danika Starr, who made key layups late in regulation and overtime.

"We were able to get some decent looks late in regulation that just didn't go down, but the bottom line is that you can't commit 24 turnovers and expect to win, especially on the road against a quality program," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose team led 38-28 at halftime and 54-47 going into the fourth quarter.

After seeing their lead slashed to two points early in the fourth, the Seawolves responded with a 7-0 run, making it 61-52 on Jazzpher Evans's three-pointer with 7:11 remaining. The visitors would go scoreless for nearly five minutes, however, and Northwest Nazarene earned its first tie of the second half when Eubanks hit two free throws with 46 seconds remaining.

UAA answered on a midrange jumper from Nicole Pinckney to go ahead with 24 seconds left, only to see the hosts tie it on Starr's layup 16 seconds later. NNU defended UAA's final possession of regulation well, forcing Pinckney into an off-balance, baseline jumper at the buzzer.

Rabb scored inside on the first possession of overtime to break her previous career high of 27 points (Dec. 10, 2022 vs William Jewell), but the Seawolves would not lead again. After Rabb made it 71-71 with two free throws at the 2:32 mark, the Nighthawks responded with a traditional three-point play from Star and two free throws from Eubanks for the deciding points.

UAA scored on a fastbreak layup by Rabb with a minute left and two free throws by Kimani Fernandez with 13 seconds to go, but NNU defended well again on the last possession, forcing Elaina Mack into a closely guarded three-point miss at the buzzer.

A transfer from Augustana (S.D.), Rabb tied for the seventh-most points in Seawolf history and the third-most against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent, shooting 9 of 21 from the field and 14 of 15 at the foul stripe. The 5-10 forward added seven rebounds, two assists and four steals as she recorded the first 30-point game for a Seawolf since Hannah Wandersee had 32 at Western Oregon on Feb. 10, 2018.

Fernandez finished with a season-high 10- points on 3-of-5 shooting and five rebounds.
