Hats off to Helgeson as Seawolves skate to draw

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA – The last time a Seawolf scored a hat trick was Brett Cameron in 2014 when Max Helgeson was a stick boy for the team. Friday night Max tallied the first hat trick by a Seawolf player in nearly a decade when he led the University of Alaska Anchorage to a 7-7 tie against Lindenwood.

Max scored the first goal of the game unassisted at 3:10 of the first period.

Brandon Lajoie scored his first of two goals at 9:21, but Hunter Johannes scored for Lindenwood to cut the Alaska Anchorage lead to 2-1.

The second period started just like the first with Helgeson scoring 22 seconds into the period.

The middle period featured a bevy of goals as both teams scored four each.

The high-scoring second period was followed by a penalty-ridden third period which featured seven penalties for 17 penalty minutes.

Andy Willis scored for the Lions at 17:21, but Helgeson scored just 26 seconds later to put the Seawolves back on top 7-6.

Kyle Jeffers scored the game-tying goal for Lindenwood with 31 seconds remaining.

Neither team scored in overtime as the game was officially recorded as a tie for both squads, but UAA won the shootout.

"I was happy to see the offensive output from all four lines," said head coach Matt Shasby. "We need to clean some things up for tomorrow like power play and defensive transition. Another great crowd tonight, they kept us going through the highs and lows of that game."

UAA had 11 players record a point, including goalie Joey Lamoreaux, with six players finishing with multiple points.

UAA out-shot LU 44-33 and Lamoreaux finished with 26 saves.

UAA (0-for-6) and LU (0-for-3) were each scoreless on the powerplay.

Alaska Anchorage and Lindenwood will both play their final game of the season against each other Saturday at 6 pm.
