ANCHORAGE (Sept. 1) – St. Cloud State outside hitter Kenzie Foley collected 17 kills Friday to push St. Cloud State to a 25-17, 25-21, 25-18 victory over Alaska Anchorage in a battle of nationally top-15 ranked NCAA Div. II volleyball teams in the Seawolf Invitational.
The Seawolves (2-4) – ranked No. 14 in the preseason top-25 poll – were led by seven kills from junior rightside hitter
Larssen Anderson and 11 digs from senior outside hitter
Nicole Blue as their 16-match Alaska Airlines Center win streak was snapped.
Ranked No. 7, the Huskies (3-0) also got 10 kills from Sam Zimmerman and 41 assists from setter Emma Berran as they outhit the hosts .281 to .115.
After falling behind early in the opening set, UAA recovered in the second and used back-to-back kills from
Leilani Elder and
Makana Eleneki to grab an 11-8 advantage. UAA led 20-15 when Anderson and
Leilani Elder stuffed a Husky attack, but the visitors from Minnesota would rally, erasing a 21-19 deficit with the final six points of the set.
The Seawolves kept it close again in the third, drawing within 16-15 on one of five kills by junior
Bethany Tuchardt. St. Cloud answered with a huge surge, though, and pulled away with a 9-3 run to end it. The Huskies hit .567 (17 kills, 0 errors, 30 attacks) in the final frame.
UAA got six kills on .357 hitting by Elder and six kills from Blue, while
Makana Eleneki led the hosts with 15 assists.
The Seawolves look to even their record with two matches Saturday on the tournament's final day, facing Cal Poly Humboldt (2-1) at 2 p.m. and Florida Tech (0-2) in the 7 p.m. finale.
