Seawolves control Wildcats, improve to 12-3

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 11) – Junior point guard Dillon Barrientos had 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists Thursday to propel hot-shooting Alaska Anchorage to a 75-61 men's basketball victory over Central Washington at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (12-3, 2-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 16 points from Tyson Gilbert and 15 points from fellow senior guard Dathan Satchell as they shot 51.9 percent (28 of 54) from the field, knocking down 11 of 25 from long range.

The Wildcats (9-5, 2-3) got 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting from reserve forward Mitch Brizee, but the rest of the visitors shot just 17 of 56 from the field, including 7 of 31 on three-pointers.

"It's nice to be back home and finally getting a little rhythm to our schedule. I thought we had a good start to the game – it was nice to see Dathan and Tyson hit some early shots, and I think everyone relaxed when that happened," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team was playing its first home game since Nov. 25. "We turned the ball over too much, but we did well on the boards against a very good rebounding team, and we got a lot of production up and down the lineup."

After struggling offensively five days ago in a 64-58 overtime win at Alaska Fairbanks, UAA came out sharp, scoring on its first three possessions and forcing and early Wildcat timeout with an 8-0 advantage.

The Seawolves never trailed, although Central Washington forged the game's lone tie at 28-28 on a jumper from Maverick Sanders (9 points, 5 rebounds) at the 5:39 mark of the opening half.

The deadlock lasted just 19 seconds, however, as Barrientos fed Satchell (6-10 FG, 3-6 3FG) for a trey, Hasaan Herrington ripped a steal and sailed in for a layup, and Barrientos drove for a layup and a 7-0 run over the next 75 seconds.

Brizee kept the visitors within 42-36 on a basket with 18:30 remaining, but the Seawolves scored the next nine points – including five from freshman Sloan Lentfer on nice feeds from Sawyer Storms – and led by double figures the rest of the way.

Storms finished with eight points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Lentfer had seven points (3-3 FG, 1-1 FT), five rebounds, two assists and no turnovers, and tied with Gilbert for a game-best plus-24 plus/minus stat.

A transfer from College of the Canyons (Calif.), Barrientos established a new career high for rebounds and dished his most assists against an NCAA Div. II opponent, while shooting 5 of 10 from the floor, 3 of 4 on threes and 2 of 3 on free throws.

UAA also got a big lift off the bench from Herrington as the East High product tallied eight points (3-6 FG, 2-2 FT) and a pair of boards in 15 minutes.

The Seawolves go for a fourth straight win Saturday when they host Northwest Nazarene at 7:30 p.m. at the Alaska Airlines Center. Visit GoSeawolves.com for tickets, live links and more.
