Satchell, Seawolves sink Nighthawks, 71-68

ANCHORAGE (Jan. 13) – Senior guard Dathan Satchell scored a career-high 24 points and point guard Dillon Barrientos had 14 points and six assists Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team fend off Northwest Nazarene for a 71-68 victory at the Alaska Airlines Center.

The Seawolves (13-3, 3-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 10 points, five assists and three steals from senior forward Jaron Williams to claim their fourth straight win and stand alone in fourth place in the early league standings.

The Nighthawks (8-6, 4-2) were led by 15 points and seven rebounds from forward Aaron Murphy, along with 13 points on 4-of-4 shooting and five assists from fellow reserve Rayzhon Bergersen. The visitors from Nampa, Idaho, outrebounded the hosts 35-25, but were outscored 39-12 from three-point range.

"I thought that was a gutsy win for our club against a quality opponent," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "We did a great job of finding the hot hand in Dathan and getting him the ball in position to convert. There were also big contributions up and down our lineup as we dealt with foul trouble. Their stat lines won't jump out at you, but both Trey Evans (5 points, no turnovers in 13 minutes) and Luke Devine (2 rebounds, one steal in 8 minutes) gave us critical performances off the bench."

Despite the final score, UAA controlled action for much of the contest, holding the lead for more than 35 minutes.

The Seawolves jumped to a 10-2 lead before the Nighthawks rallied for eight straight, forging the first of six ties in the opening stanza. NNU earned its only advantage when Yaru Harvey scored in the paint to make it 25-23 with five minutes on the clock, but Evans answered with a pair of free throws and connected on a three-pointer from the corner to spark a 13-0 UAA run.

UAA led 40-28 at halftime and pushed it to 57-44 when Satchell beat the shot clock for a trey at the 10-minute mark. The Nighthawks would not fold, however, using an 8-0 surge to pull within 60-57 with 4:38 left.

After trading baskets, Gilbert connected on his only three-pointer of the night for a 65-59 advantage, and Barrientos converted a short jumper for a 67-61 lead with 90 seconds showing. Following a three-pointer by Ryzin Bergersen, the teams traded turnovers on the next two possessions, and Williams made two free throws for a 69-64 lead with 23 seconds remaining.

Aaron Murphy responded with a putback layin for NNU, and Gilbert converted one of two free throws with nine seconds left. Rayzhon Bergersen then drove for an uncontested layup to make it 70-68, and the Nighthawks sent Hasaan Herrington to the foul stripe with 3.5 ticks left.

Herrington missed his first attempt and made his second, and Rayzhon Bergersen's baseball pass was intercepted by Williams at midcourt to prevent a last-ditch shot by the Nighthawks.

Satchell shot 8 of 11 from the floor (6-8 3FG) and grabbed a team-high six rebounds as the Tracy, Calif., native bettered his previous high by one point before fouling out late.

Barrientos made 3 of 6 three-pointers and committed only two turnovers in 33 minutes, while freshman forward Sloan Lenfter contributed seven points, four rebounds, and multiple fouls drawn against NNU leading scorer Gabe Murphy (13.5 ppg), who was limited to six points, two rebounds, no assists and two turnovers.

The Seawolves return to the road to face Western Washington (Thur., 6 pm AST) and Simon Fraser (Sat., 6 pm AST) next week. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
