BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Jan. 18) – Senior guard
Tyson Gilbert poured in 25 points but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped Thursday, falling 92-83 to Western Washington at Carver Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (13-4, 3-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 14 points and 5 rebounds from senior
Jaron Williams and 13 points and five assists from junior point guard
Dillon Barrientos as they lost despite shooting a solid 48 percent from the floor and committing only seven turnovers.
The Vikings (11-6, 3-3) got a game-high 29 points on 9-of-15 shooting, seven rebounds and four assists from guard Kai Johnson, while Jonathan Ned collected 23 points on identical accuracy. Louis Grante-Halliday added 15 points on perfect shooting (4-4 FG, 1-1 3FG, 6-6 FT), helping the hosts snap a three-game losing skid with 57 percent shooting, making 10 of 20 from long range.
"That was disappointing the way we played tonight," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne, whose team entered the game No. 2 nationally in scoring defense (60.5 ppg) and No. 1 in three-point defense (.259). "We did not play to our identity, which is defense. We allowed Western to dictate the flow of the game and they are a good team when you allow them that freedom. Credit to them. We will regroup and get ready for another tough conference road test Saturday."
In a game matching the GNAC's highest scoring team against its stingiest defensive club, it was the Seawolf defense that prevailed at the outset. UAA took the lead in the early moments and pushed the advantage to 28-20 on two straight baskets by Gilbert.
Johnson would spark the Vikings, however, starting and ending an 8-0 run that flipped the lead with 3:45 to play in the first half. Western Washington continued its surge for a 42-35 halftime advantage and scored the first eight points of the second half, prompting a UAA timeout at the 18:20 mark.
The Seawolves sliced it to a single-digit deficit several times in the final 10 minutes, but could get no closer than 67-60 on a three-pointer by
Dathan Satchell with 8:48 left.
Gilbert came two points shy of matching his career high on 9-of-18 shooting, along with four rebounds, two assists and two steals, while Satchell finished with 12 points to put four Seawolves in double figures.
Senior forward
Sawyer Storms added nine points (3-6 FG), six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while
Sloan Lentfer and
Hasaan Herrington had four points apiece.
Now exactly one-third of the way through the GNAC campaign, the Seawolves head north of the border to face Simon Fraser on Saturday at 6 p.m. AST. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
