Seawolves tear up Red Leafs for GNAC road victory

BURNABY, British Columbia (Jan. 20) – Senior guard Tyson Gilbert scored 21 points and posted the first double-double of his career Saturday to help propel the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team to a 71-49 victory over Simon Fraser at the SFU West Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (14-4, 4-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 18 points from junior point guard Dillon Barrientos and a career-high 10 points from Hasaan Herrington as they scored the game's first 14 points and led by double figures for the final 24 minutes.

The Red Leafs (3-15, 1-6) were led by 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting from guard David Penney, but were outshot .491 to .357 from the field and outrebounded 33-26.

"Tonight we got back to our defensive identity, and it resulted in another solid team win," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne. "It obviously helped to get off to that great start, but then we did a nice job of controlling the pace of play and not letting up when we established our big lead in the second half. A lot of guys stepped up tonight with Dathan (Satchell) out sick, especially Hasaan, and it was good to get Caleb Larsen (4 pts) back into our lineup for some big minutes."

An East Anchorage High School alum who transferred home from Texas-Tyler, Herrington matched his career high from his days at UTT with 10 points (3-5 FG, 2-3 3FG, 2-2 FT), doing it in his first starting assignment as a Seawolf.

After holding the Red Leafs scoreless for more than six minutes, UAA had to fight off a Simon Fraser run that cut the lead to 17-14 with 9:25 on the first-half clock. Gilbert answered with a pair of free throws and completed a three-point play on the next possession, however, as the Seawolves held the hosts to just two more field goals the rest of the half, establishing a 41-22 lead at the break.

Herrington scored to open the second-half, and UAA pushed its largest lead to 63-38 on a basket by Gilbert with 6:10 remaining.

Gilbert shot 6 of 12 from the floor (3-8 3FG) and 6 of 7 at the free-throw line, along with two assists and a career-high 10 rebounds.

Barrientos continued his hot shooting of late with 8-of-13 accuracy (2-4 3FG), adding four rebounds three assists and just one turnover in 36 minutes, while Jaron Williams – another East High product – chipped in eight points, two assists and two steals without a turnover in 24 minutes.

Senior forward Sawyer Storms had six points and six rebounds for UAA, which will get seven of its final 11 regular-season games at the Alaska Airlines Center. The Seawolves return home to play the second part of a Thursday women's/men's doubleheader, facing Western Oregon in a scheduled 7:30 pm tip.
