ANCHORAGE (Jan. 13) –
Senya Rabouin scored 20 points and
Kya Pearson dished seven assists Saturday to help the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team pull away late for an 84-55 victory over Alaska Fairbanks at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (9-5, 3-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 18 points and eight rebounds from junior center
Tori Hollingshead, running their winning streak to seven games and beating their in-state rivals for the 30th time in the last 31 meetings.
The Nanooks (2-13, 0-5) were led by 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting and 10 rebounds from forward Emma Wass, while Ellen Silva added 13 points and nine rebounds.
"We got off to a quick start but then we stopped doing the things that got us there," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy, whose team shot 53 percent in the opening quarter and led 47-32 at halftime. "Fortunately we were able to reset ourselves a little after they went on their run in the third quarter, and our depth finally wore them down."
After
Elaina Mack swished a 17-foot jumper to start the third quarter, the Seawolves went without a field goal for the next six minutes, seeing their lead cut to 50-44 on a basket by Silva. Rabouin fed
Ja'Niah Alexander for a layup at the 3:29 mark to end the drought, then grabbed a steal that led to a Hollingshead layup. The Central Arizona transfer followed with back-to-back three-pointers as UAA went on a 20-0 run spanning quarters.
The reigning GNAC Player of the Week, Rabouin shot 8 of 14 from the field (2-4 3FG), along with five assists, four steals, just one turnover, and a game-best plus-30 plus/minus stat.
Hollingshead shot 8 of 17 and grabbed six of her rebounds on the offensive end, along with three assists, three steals and two blocks, while Mack had 11 points (3-7 3FG).
A transfer from Laney (Calif.) College, Pearson dished her most assists as a Seawolf, without committing a turnover in 19 minutes. Alexander had seven points (3-3 FG) off the bench, and
Jazzpher Evans had five assists.
The Seawolves forced 29 Nanooks turnovers and committed a season-low nine of their own.
UAA returns to the road next week for games at Central Washington (Thur., 6 pm AST) and Northwest Nazarene (Sat., 5 pm AST). Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
