ANCHORAGE (Jan. 25) – Guard Cali McClave had 15 points and eight assists Thursday to propel visiting Western Oregon to a 73-53 women's basketball upset of Alaska Anchorage at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (11-6, 5-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) were led by a career-high 14 points from junior guard
Kya Pearson, but the hosts were outshot .429 to .283 and committed 20 turnovers as their nine-game winning streak came to an end.
The Wolves (10-9, 3-5) also got a game-high 17 points from guard Bella Pedrojetti as they stopped a four-game losing streak and beat UAA for the first time since Dec. 6, 2003 – snapping a string of 37 losses in a row.
Having not lost since Dec. 2, UAA came out sharp offensively, building a 23-16 lead after a quarter and scoring the first three points of the second quarter. But the momentum would stall as WOU went on an 18-7 run to end the period.
The lead went back and forth over the first few minutes of the third quarter, and UAA tied it 42-42 on a baseline jumper by
Tori Hollingshead with 3:32 on the clock.
The Wolves took control from there, however, getting consecutive baskets from Kiylynn Dawkins and Pedrojetti to cap a 7-0 run. UAA sliced it to 49-47 on an athletic layup by Pearson with 8:53 remaining, but could get no closer as the hosts went without a field goal the rest of the game.
Pearson shot 5 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 at the charity stripe, while junior guard
Jazzpher Evans scored nine of her 11 points in the first half and finished with five assists and no turnovers.
Senior forward
Vishe' Rabb added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center on Saturday at 5:15 pm to face Saint Martin's in another GNAC contest. Find tickets, live links and more at GoSeawolves.com.
