ANCHORAGE (Jan. 27) – Junior center
Tori Hollingshead scored 18 points and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team used a historic defensive performance Saturday to record a 62-41 victory over Saint Martin's at the Alaska Airlines Center.
The Seawolves (12-6, 6-3 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points and nine rebounds from senior forward
Vishe' Rabb as they outrebounded the visitors 45-23 and held them to just eight points in the first half.
The Saints (4-12, 2-7) were led by eight points and five rebounds from center Sarah Lamet as they lost despite edging UAA .327 (16 of 49) to .316 (18 of 57) in field-goal percentage.
"That was an effort win tonight," said UAA head coach
Ryan McCarthy. "We couldn't get consistent production offensively, but we controlled the boards and didn't give them anything easy in the first half defensively. It's nice to get back in the win column in any case, and we will have to bear down and find a renewed focus for the second half of the conference season coming up."
Coming off a 73-53 upset loss to Western Oregon that snapped a nine-game winning streak, the Seawolves took control from the outset against the Saints and led by double figures for the final 29 minutes, 33 seconds.
Rabb scored six points in the first quarter to stake the Seawolves to a 15-6 lead, and the Saints could not muster a basket goal in the second quarter, going 0 of 10 from the field and 2 of 6 at the foul stripe. The two second-quarter points equaled the second-fewest allowed by a Seawolf team in any quarter against a Div. II foe, while the eight first-half points were the seventh-fewest allowed by a UAA team and set a program record for a conference game.
UAA led by at least 12 points the entire second half, building its largest advantage to 44-20 at the end of three quarters.
The reigning GNAC Player of the Week, Hollingshead shot 6 of 8 from the field and 6 of 7 at the foul stripe, along with six rebounds and two steals.
Junior point guard
Senya Rabouin had 10 points, five rebounds and two steals, and junior forward
Jaisa Gamble had eight points – her most in a GNAC game – and a team-high three steals.
Junior forward
Kate Robertson added nine rebounds and two steals for the Seawolves, who stand alone in third place at the midway point of the GNAC campaign.
UAA returns to the road next week to face Simon Fraser on Thursday and nationally ranked Western Washington on Saturday. Both games tip at 6 p.m. AST, with live links available at GoSeawolves.com.
