BURNABY, British Columbia (Feb. 1) – Senior forward
Vishe' Rabb had 15 points, nine rebounds and some late heroics in regulation, but the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team could not contain a late Simon Fraser comeback Thursday in a 79-72 overtime loss at the SFU West Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (12-7, 6-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 11 points, four assists and four steals from junior point guard
Senya Rabouin as they were hurt by 25 turnovers and a season-high 13 three-pointers allowed.
The Red Leafs (11-10, 4-6) were led by 26 points, seven assists and five steals from Sophia Wisotzki and 23 points from Jessica Wisotzki as they erased a 54-37 deficit with 11 minutes remaining, snapping losing series losing streaks of 10 overall and nine in Burnaby.
Having earned an 89-68 win over Simon Fraser on Jan. 6 in Anchorage, UAA found itself trailing 23-22 after a high-scoring first quarter rematch that saw the Red Leafs make five three-pointers.
The Seawolves recovered defensively, however, forging a 43-32 halftime lead as they held the Canadians to just one trey and 17 points over the middle two quarters to seemingly take control.
UAA went cold from the field in the final quarter, shooting 4 of 16 to open the door for the Red Leafs.
Leading 59-54 with under three minutes to play, Rabb scored three times in a 2-minute span to extend Seawolf leads, only to see the hosts answer each time. After Rabb's jumper made it 65-62 with 32 seconds left, the Red Leafs got a tying trey from Sophia Wisotzki, who swished the shot while drifting left off an inbounds pass.
UAA center
Tori Hollingshead was blocked by Gemma Cutler in the waning seconds of regulation.
The Seawolves forged a 72-72 tie midway through the extra session on a three-point play from
Kate Robertson, but Jessica Wisotzki nailed a midrange jumper and Sophia Wisotzki followed with a back-breaking trey with 58 seconds left.
Hollingshead finished with 10 points, six rebounds, three steals and two blocks, while sophomore guard
Elaina Mack added 11 points and three rebounds. Junior forward
Jaisa Gamble grabbed five of her career-high eight rebounds on the offensive end, helping UAA to a 43-39 advantage on the boards.
The Seawolves finish their road trip Saturday with a 6 p.m. AST tip against Western Washington in Bellingham, Wash. Find live video and stats links at GoSeawolves.com.
