Seawolves ride to victory at #13 Vikings

BELLINGHAM, Wash. (Feb. 3) – Junior point guard Senya Rabouin scored a career-high 28 points and the Alaska Anchorage women's basketball team repelled a late rally by No. 13 Western Washington for a 77-69 women's basketball victory Saturday at Carver Gymnasium.

The Seawolves (13-7, 7-4 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got a season-high 14 points from junior forward Kate Robertson as they swept the season series from their arch rivals.

The Vikings (17-4, 9-2) were led by 18 points, 10 rebounds, seven assists and three steals from All-America center Brooke Walling, but were outscored 30-14 in points off turnovers as their eight-game winning streak was snapped.

"I couldn't be more proud of the guts and toughness our team displayed tonight, both mentally and physically," said UAA head coach Ryan McCarthy, whose squad surrendered a double-digit fourth-quarter lead in Thursday's 79-72 overtime loss at Simon Fraser. "We learned a painful lesson the other night, but I think we put that knowledge to good use and displayed great poise tonight, even when they made their runs. Hopefully this can spark some momentum for us again as we head into the home stretch."

After leading throughout most of a 61-54 win over the Vikings on Jan. 4 in Anchorage, the Seawolves again took early control, grabbing a 20-10 advantage on a trey by Rabouin late in the opening quarter.

Western Washington answered with a 15-2 run over the next three minutes, but Rabouin squelched that momentum with a traditional three-point play as UAA scored the next nine points.

Robertson swished a midrange jumper to put the visitors up 44-34 at halftime, and the largest lead grew to 48-34 on two free throws from Tori Hollingshead. Kya Pearson opened the fourth quarter by scoring off a Viking turnover for a 62-49 lead, although Aspen Garrison's layup would slice it to a 65-59 count with 4:56 to play.

Rabouin provided the clinching plays when she stole the ball and completed a traditional three-point opportunity, then fed Vishe' Rabb for a three-pointer that doubled the lead to 71-59 with 3:26 left.

Rabouin shot 5 of 7 from long range, 10 of 16 overall and collected four rebounds, five assists and five steals, while committing no turnovers in 28 minutes. The Central Arizona College transfer topped her own UAA season-high scoring total by one point, reaching the 20-point plateau for the fourth time.

Meanwhile, Robertson shot 5 of 8 from the field and 4 of 4 on free throws to come one point from matching her career high. The Casper, Wyo., native added three rebounds, two assists, two steals, a block and no turnovers in a season-high 30 minutes.

Rabb had eight points, six rebounds and two steals, and Mia Ross came off the bench with seven points on 3-of-5 shooting for UAA, which earned its first regular-season sweep of the Vikings since 2018-19.

The Seawolves return to the road next week to face Alaska Fairbanks in a 3 p.m. tip on Saturday, Feb. 10. Find live links at GoSeawolves.com.
