Seawolves outlast Nanooks in OT, 64-58

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (Jan. 6) – Dillon Barrientos scored six of his game-high 19 points in overtime and the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team used another sterling defensive effort to earn a 64-58 victory over Alaska Fairbanks on Saturday night at the Patty Center.

The Seawolves (11-3, 1-2 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) also got 12 points apiece from senior forwards Sawyer Storms and Jaron Williams as they made up for subpar shooting with a plus-nine turnover differential.

The Nanooks (3-8, 1-2) were led by 14 points and 10 rebounds from forward Jackson Bereal, but the hosts were held to 36 percent shooting, connecting on just 3 of 18 from long range.

"That was a nice resilient win by our guys," said UAA head coach Rusty Osborne, whose team overcame shooting numbers of .338 (22 of 65) on field goals and .385 (10 of 26) on free throws. "Our defensive effort once again bailed us out of a poor offensive game. We have good shooters both from the floor and the free throw line, so it is frustrating for all of us. These are great young men who care about each other, so I know they'll put in the work to get better. It will be nice to finally return home next week."

Playing their sixth straight game away from the Alaska Airlines Center and their first of any sort since Dec. 19, the Seawolves came out ice cold in the first half, making just 6 of 31 field goals and trailing 23-16 at the break.

UAA caught fire to open the second stanza though, with three treys from Tyson Gilbert among a 5-of-6 three-point display in two and a half minutes. The game stayed a one-possession affair for all but 20 seconds during the final 18 minutes of regulation, with the Seawolves clinging to a late 52-49 advantage.

The visitors would execute well defensively in the final three minutes, but could not crack the scoreboard again, and UAF tied it with 52-52 on a layup by Trey Anderson with 24 seconds remaining. Barrientos missed a jumper with 3.4 seconds left, and a desperation three by UAF guard Demarcus Hall-Scriven was short at the buzzer.

Barrientos opened the overtime scoring with a three-pointer that put UAA ahead for good, and Storms grabbed an offensive board and dished to Williams for an easy layup to make it 59-56 at the 1:39 mark. After a defensive stop, UAA ran the shot clock down and Williams drained a clinching three-pointer from 35 feet to double the lead with 58 seconds left.

Storms shot 5 of 10 from the field, grabbed eight rebounds and dished five assists, while Williams – the reigning GNAC Player of the Week – snagged seven rebounds.

A transfer from College of the Canyons (Calif.), Barrientos connected on 4 of 8 three-pointers, had five rebounds, and drew a team-high six fouls in a game that featured a combined 45 hacks.

Gilbert gave UAA four double-figure scorers with 11 points (3-7 3FG), plus four assists, three steals and no turnovers. The Seawolves committed just eight turnovers as a team.

Senior guard Dathan Satchell matched his career high with seven rebounds – his most against a fellow NCAA Div. II opponent.

The Seawolves return to the Alaska Airlines Center for the first time since Nov. 25 when they host Central Washington on Thursday (7 p.m. AST). Find tickets and live links at GoSeawolves.com.
