BILLINGS, Mont. (Nov. 2) – Junior forward
Bishop Tosi led a comeback attempt with 14 points and seven rebounds, but the Alaska Anchorage men's basketball team could not recover from an early deficit Saturday, falling 65-51 to Texas A&M-International at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic at Alterowitz Gymnasium.
The Seawolves (2-2) also got 10 points and a pair of steals from junior guard
Zach Ibbetson, along with nine points and six rebounds from junior forward
Jesse Stines, outrebounding the Lone Star Conference club 34-31.
The Dustdevils (1-1) were led by 19 points and four assists from guard Emaniel Alexandre, plus 14 points and seven rebounds from guard Anthony Ignowski. TAMIU shot 50 percent from the field in both halves and held the Seawolves to .294 (15-51) shooting.
"We did not respond very well on either end of the floor in the first half," said UAA head coach
Rusty Osborne. "We are still a work in progress with many new guys and multiple guys coming off two-year breaks. However I was proud of our response in the second half, playing better on both ends of the floor. Unfortunately we did not make enough shots, but we took care of the ball, rebounded and guarded like our program has done in the past."
UAA found itself in an 8-0 hole before
John McFadden started the scoring with a three-pointer, and trailed 23-9 when the Dustdevil forward Esteban Roacho scored on a fast break.
The Seawolves were down 35-19 at halftime and 41-23 with 13 minutes remaining when they made a late charge. Tosi sliced it to 41-33 on a putback with 10:35 left, and
Hasaan Herrington scored in the lane to keep the deficit 51-43 at the 4:09 mark.
Alexandre would answer with another three-pointer on the next possession, however, and the Seawolves could get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Senior guard
Sean Evans finished with seven points, and senior guard
Dillon Barrientos led UAA with three assists.
The Seawolves conclude their three games at the Tip-Off Classic with a Sunday 1 p.m. AST contest against the University of Mary. Find links to live video and stats at GoSeawolves.com.
